1837 Edward F. Sise & Co., Portsmouth, NH, HT-195 / Low-132, Hard Times Token, 28mm Diameter, Copper.

Edward F. Sise was the founder of the firm of general commission and forwarding merchants which issued this card. He was born in Dover, N.H. on Sept. 19, 1799 and died May 25, 1868. The firm advertised itself as importers of crockery and glassware and dealers in coal. The Company part was E.F Sise and John Walker but after Sise's withdrawal about 1854, Walker continued the business in partnership with sons William H. Sise and Joseph Sise, until Walker retired in 1883 and Joseph Sise died in 1894. The firm occupied the same premises from 1822 until at least 1895, according to Lyman H. Low.

I was in a shop today and some one said it's a mule I looked back and the guy in back of the counter said I don't care i'll pay you $2.00 for it so after a bit the guy took off I was buying some silver and ask if I can buy that medal he said yes and I bought $1500 in mix silver and stuff then he toss this at me and said you can keep it no charge, I did say thank you.

I know they are a lot less then this now but for free it for me.

    April 27, 2009

On April 14, Tony Santumora submitted a medal depicting an Abigail Adams obverse and a Louisa Adams reverse design, or what is known as a mule. In numismatics, a mule refers to a coin, medal or token that is struck with a die intended for a different coin. So far, only two or three dozen sets with this error have been reported. Most of the sets have already been selling in the $800 - $1,000 range.

Mule coins are very rare, and since the Mint has steps in place to prevent them from being struck, it is almost impossible to produce a mule for a currently circulating coin. However, since this is a medal and not a circulating coin, fewer restrictions apply. The Abigail and Louisa Adams mule was probably created by accident when a Mint employee confused both Adams dies. Noteworthy is the fact that the 2007 Abigail Adams medal mule had a reverse design from a different spouse and from the following year!

All 2007 Spouse Medal sets contain four different medals depicting Martha Washington, Abigail Adams, Dolly Madison and finally a Liberty design on the obverse (since Thomas Jefferson was a widower). The four different medals originally came in a custom envelope and sets were priced at $12.95 each by the U.S. Mint.

Tony Santumora said he ordered one set on November 26th. He has been collecting all of the Presidential Dollar Medals. He also mentioned that he has ordered many other products from the Mint over the years and has never found anything as worthwhile as this. Mr. Santumora goes on to mention, "I didn't realize I had this error until I read in Numismatic News where they mentioned there were some mule errors found. Once I found it, I thought to myself this is unbelievable, because that stuff doesn't ever happen to me and I'm always ordering items from the Mint."

Interestingly, John Adams, the 2nd President of the United States, was married to Abigail Adams, and their son, John Quincy Adams, the 6th President of the United States, later married Louisa Adams. Therefore, the Adams mule has Abigail Adams on the obverse and her daughter-in-law Louisa Adams on the reverse.

In 2007, the U.S. Mint originally began issuing Spouse coins composed of 24kt gold. Along with the gold Spouse coins, the Mint initially offered the bronze medal version of the Presidential Dollars and the Spouse coins – the Spouse Medal sets in which some of these mule coins can be found. Since the errors were recently discovered, there might be many more mules out there just waiting to be found.

I have fallen in love with this one. But it's time to part ways tomorrow. I hope it ends up being at least a hundred dollar coin. GSC sold one for a nice price and their coins never look like their photos. Mine look better in hand, not the other way around. =P

More money for my PCGS submission fund. I'll miss her.

Nice William Idler copy of the Peter Getz possible pattern. I just noticed that these have the letter "J" in the year in place of 1 for "J782". Anyone know the reason for this?

That's just about the way the Getz Pattern shows the date. Here's an actual Getz Pattern pictured on CoinFacts:
