Interesting Observation for the Dime Guys

Last night, a friend bought a very rare 1829 Curl Base 2 dime (JR-10 for those of you who like that sort of thing). This variety is a stopper for the series, with somewhere around 40 pieces known, all in low grades. Here's a photo of one of the two finest examples graded at PCGS (VF35):

It occurred to me that the number punches didn't look like any that I'd seen on other Capped Bust dimes, so I spent some time looking at each variety from the 1820s and couldn't find a match; however, it occurred to me that 1829 was the year that they brought back the half dime. A quick look at 1829 half dimes was instructive (take a close look at the two and remember that the photos haven't been sized):

Although the Curl Base 2 was discovered in 1973, I don't think that the punch linkage between the two denominations has been noted. Sort of an academic observation, but interesting ( at least to me).

I owned one once.....raw. Never got around to getting in plastic and seems I sold it in a roll. Don't know what happened that I got it mixed in but perhaps the grand boys were helping sort the safe that day.......sure do miss it and it was like an AG.

    That's a shame - it's really cool variety.
