Did you have an expert authenticator check your coins? There's a lot of very deceptive counterfeit gold dollars in the marketplace and in collections unbeknownst to their owner.

Yeah, I have a family member in the coin business who authenticated them. I agree though and always a risk with raw coins.
Legend Auctions recently posted highlights from their upcoming July Regency auction (held in conjunction with the PCGS Invitational ) and there are lot of $1 gold being offered from the Chester Roche collection, including a PCGS MS61 1850D !
Described in the catalog as follows, "an extremely RARE Mint State survivor from an original mintage of 8,382, indeed it is one of the rarest, and yet underrated and undervalued Dahlonega mint gold dollars..."
Unfortunately they dont have pics of the coins up yet, just colorful descriptions, but reading them is still kind of fun, and i look forward to seeing the coins when they do post!

@coin4sale I'm not familiar with Roche's coins, but sure would love to see the photographs. Thanks for the heads up.
As for gold dollars, I'm no collector -- only as a type coin. I have a Type 1 but haven't photographed it yet.
