Taking a Flyer

ctf_error_coinsctf_error_coins Posts: 15,433 ✭✭✭✭✭

I know most of you do this from time to time.

You do it a little more often in Error Coins.

My last three purchases are all flyers in route .... ;)

    What is that mean? :/

    google is your friend ;)

but basically, it means taking a chance on something that you hope will turn out very good for you.

I do this all the time. Sometimes it is a fail and you keep it. Sometimetimes it is misrepresented and you return it.

In any case, you go in with some insight into what you are buying and hope that it is what you think it is.

You are risking your money for a potentially bigger return.

I started out as a collector and collected for many years focusing on eye appeal. Over time I started selling basically to be able to buy more coins for my collection. At one point I was offered an expensive coin that I had to have for my collection. That was the turning point because I could not afford nor justify the purchase. Because I could not complete the collection, I decided to sell it. My collection became my inventory. These first few prized possessions were hard to sell, but I did sell them. I also sold EVERYTHING that was not an error coin as I wanted to specialize. I then sold all my low-end errors. I would also buy any error that fit my inventory if it was priced right. I only have the nice stuff left.

Honestly, it is way more fun to be a dealer and handle some really high-end stuff that you can not afford to hold in your collection. I do still have and add to a personal collection of birth year error coins.

Did you ever get emotional and too attached on any particular one to let go?

Yes at first, but that is a dangerous emotion. Yes, I sold some coins that I really love. I just negotiated to sell one of my favorite coins that I have had for at least 12 years. I got it PCGS Mint Error Certified last month and now its sold.

The thing is what you do not realize is that money goes into finding even cooler coins.

My business has grown so much in the last year it kinda blows me away. Kinda feels like a tipping point. Look at my eBay inventory, way nicer than my collection used to be.

I have done that, on coins and other items. I have been very fortunate though.. since when I took those chances, I really did know what I was doing. Some of my most notable flyers returned an 80% profit. Been a while since I had one that good... but those deals really felt good. Two coin deals and several firearm deals. Cheers, RickO

Only way to be a dealer and a collector is to buy a lot of stuff you don't like to sell.

Completely disagree. I mostly only buy things that I would like to own myself. Of course, there are exceptions. If you specialize, you buy the best for the price and avoid everything else.

But you admitted you had to stop collecting to become a dealer and sold your collection. I could never do it. Because I know what I like and I like what I know. Id have to learn about something I dont like, id want to keep all the stuff I do. I do occasionaly buy some morgans which I dont really like and resell them because I would like them if they werent morgans. But If I had to keep an inventory of toned P$ I'd have a tough time selling them.

The 2-pc Mated Pair Set above looks good,
but when you get them, make sure they
    'click' together properly.

    Thank you Fred, I will.

If they do, and I get them certified from PCGS, Do I pay for one "Mint Error" or do I pay for two?

My suggestion is to pay for the 2-pc Holder
    for the Mated Pair Set.

You'll have to pay for 2 coins (Error Tier), but
not for the oversized 2-pc. Holder. Make sure
you write on the submission form that you want
those two items in one 2-pc. holder.

My first thought of a "flyer" was .. :)
Those errors must have a story to tell. How did they stay together? A mint or bank employee grabbing them? Were they found in a roll?..

My guess would be it was found at an armored car / coin rolling operation from a large mint bag.

    Looks like a match.

If you submit them to PCGS, they
still have to 'click' in front of me !

Nice error coins and great photo :)

It would be great if PCGS had a holder that allowed both of them to stay clicked together in the holder. I’m guessing they could do it in a large format holder with a custom cutout, like ATS does with their smaller holders (for single coins).

Would also be great to see if PCGS would do a clicked together Trueview.
