1,2, and 3 look iffy to me. The rest look good.

At quick glance without blowing them up to look thoroughly: The first one looks to have an old cleaning to me. The second has rim hits that JA will likely not like. How's the luster on the RE in hand? The 1847 dollar looks like a 53 to me.

Oh, and the 1945-D guesses are moot as CAC won't even consider those. :p

Good call on the Jefferson @cameonut2011 , looks like I got carried away with the color and overlooked the proofs and major errors.

They look good! Do they accept war nickels outside of the proof and varieties? for some reason I didn't think they did.

  • oih82w8oih82w8 Posts: 12,134 ✭✭✭✭✭

    No, they don't...my mistake.

I did something similar once, so it stuck out in my mind. It is unreal that they do Ikes but not these.

I think it would be cool if that 45-D would sway CAC into taking them as well!

WOW!! I didn't realize they won't take Jefferson Nickels with the exception of a very select few. I would have made the same mistake and submitted that '45-D as well. As stated above, you would think that if they accept Ike's they would also accept at least War Nickels as they are a silver composition.

    As far as my guesses:

    1834 25c: Yes
    1835 1/2c: Yes
    1838 50c: No
    1847 Dollar: No
    1853 3c: No
    1868 5c: Yes
    1875-S/S 20c: No
    1892 10c: No
    1908 1c: Exceeded
1945-D 5c: (if they would accept, then yes)

They like original, uncleaned, above average for grade. You never know for sure.

All nice coins! None of these coins have any issues on the surfaces that one can see in the images (with the exception of many rim dings on the half cent and what appears to be the 'glossy' look (see below)), so it really depends on what they look like in hand - hairlines from an old cleaning for example is always something CAC can reject a coin for that is not always apparent in images. There is a certain 'look' for old worn silver and copper they don't like (I call it a 'glossy' look hard to describe without having the coin in hand - like the half cent above), it does not always show up in images but they have been so consistent with rejecting that particular look - again depends on what they look like in hand.

So based on what I can see without having them in hand, I would say all but the half cent have a strong chance of getting the bean, that is 8 for 9.

Good luck and let us know how it turns out. Always good to discuss submissions and why and why not some would/did bean and some wouldn't/did not before and after.

    Best, SH

Your images do wonders for supporting your cause. Good job!

I wish I could be specific with your question. Truthfully, I am not that good to render a verdict.

    I like your chances though.

I like them all especially the 1875-S/S 302 20 center.

The gargantuan problem with Jefferson nickels, very few know how to grade them. This series especially the early series 1938 to 1970, many of the coins were plagued with mushy strikes with little details. If JA is a stickler for fully detailed coins, he's not going to allow himself to be bombarded with tens of thousands of under-struck, over-graded Jefferson nickels. It's that simple.

The more qualities observed in a coin, the more desirable that coin becomes!

I can certainly understand that. It seems that very few really know what is "FS".

Well done. I got all but the first one correct (and the last one that doesn't count).
