Curious coin. Two initial reactions: I was initially struck that the obverse shows far less detail than obverse -- that's not that odd for this series (and frankly most coins) where the reverse preserves more detail -- it just seemed unusually so for this coin. Perhaps not unusual given the year and the mint, but I did want to mention it. After that, my eye was drawn to the area below the Eagle's right wing (left side of picture) above the wreath -- the light area. I'd be concerned somehting problematic is going on there and would like a better look.

As for grade, I'd say it's a VF 20 coin, and valued appropriately... if it slabs. That's provided there is not evidence of cleaning or other problems -- hardly a foregone conclusion given what I see in the photos.

Just going from the photos, and erring on the harsh side, I'd call that a $50 coin as-is.

Beyond that, it would be helpful for you to learn to grade yourself, and to that end, this website if you've not already seen it, is an execellent resource: https://www.pcgs.com/photograde/#/Seated25/Grades

While that guide will never be as valuable as seeing lots of graded coins in hand, it's probably the next best thing.

    Hope this helps....Mike

p.s. Values of coins (an bit optimistic if you're doing the selling) can be found here: https://www.pcgs.com/prices/priceguidedetail.aspx?c=109

I wanted to get a second opinion, the coin has the large o variety http://m.pcgscoinfacts.com/Coin/Detail/395927 and in my opinion it looks around fine. I was also curious of the light spot. It looks like some luster, strangely, when looking at the area with light on it.

VG10 obverse, F12 reverse. Value should be in the $500-700 range, unless it has signs of cleaning in person.

VF20... and that light area on the reverse has been cleaned...something removed....the picture does not magnify, however, I am sure some signs can be detected on close observation. Cheers, RickO

VG10. The reverse can't save it.

    I'd also go with VG10.

Check out the Coinfacts page for the 1843-O quarter (link below). Scroll down a bit, and you'll see the OP's coin is close to the VG10 example shown, but not as good as the F15 examples.

here is a hopefully better picture, there aren’t clean lines, maybe a chemical? But the chemical only got one spot on the coin? Strange, that’s why I posted this discussion.

@FadeToBlack I was planning to go to the Long Beach Coin show and hopefully selling it raw to a dealer I've known. I don't have a PGCS membership, sadly. You & I were talking on the discord a while ago about this coin

I like it. That obverse will hold the grade down but maybe you get an F12 on a good day.

The bright spot on the reverse looks like it could be from a spot being removed and may no grade, but I agree VG10 if I send it in F12 if someone else sends it in. :D

A coin with that much obverse wear should have some junk by at least 1 star on the obverse. Someone cleaned it or recently made it.

  • rickoricko Posts: 98,724 ✭✭✭✭✭

The cleaning could have been done with a solvent and a Qtip without rubbing...However, see what the experts think... Good luck, Cheers, RickO
