YOU GUYS ARE THE MOST INFORMATIVE PEOPLE I KNOW

I don’t know where else to go to find people with good useful information, so please let this one post slide as I am a good contributing member of the forum. This question is about this 1863 Civil War cavalry sword I bought 2 years ago off of a buddy who inherited it. He didn’t know much so we found similar looking swords on eBay and I paid $400 for it. I was just hoping someone could give me more info on this than I have already shared with you.

No help here but that is awesome! I would think it would have greater value than $400. Nice!

Hows the steel on the blade? Sharp?

Not very sharp any more. The tip could easily pierce something but the blade could be sharper

Ames staff and field officer's saber, D.R is inspector's mark. leather washer above pommel is unusually nice as is wire-wrapped leather.

The majority of swords made for the North were manufactured by the Ames sword company a good reference is "Angelfire.com" Typically swords of the south were straighter and not as curved and tended to be more ornate. I couldn't find a reference for D.R. nor the number 9. I couldn't make out the inscription on the heel of the scabbard but it appeared u.s.a.. couldn't find any references to any of the above. About all I can do is direct you to another reference.

I hadn’t even noticed the mark on the heel of the scabbard. It’s not USA it’s J.H.

    Ok Watchbelieve:
Ames m1840 Light Artillery Saber. " Fine Military Americana" lists one for $850.00 as referenced in "The Horse Soldier". If you got it for $400.00 looks like you got a bargain.
    Congrats
