Wanna see a Wayne Miller plate coin?

Back in the 70's and 80's Wayne Millers book on Morgan and Peace dollars was the best around. He sold his complete Morgan collection to start a homeless shelter. He's kind of a hero to me. Here's a photo of the coin he used to illustrate the 1881 Philly issue that I've had several years now.

He is a hero to me too. I still dream about owning his 78S-which still rates in my mind as one of the greatest Morgans ever minted (I think its an MS68PL). It is owned by the Miller family in Utah.
The 1881 looks amazing.
Not only was that book a great read, but it is still a great read.
In honor of the memory of Cpl. Michael E. Thompson
I know he had pictures of the 1893-CC on the walls in his coin shop. Not sure if they are still up in the new shop since he moved.
I called him a while back after reading this book. It was fun to speak with him. Very knowledgeable and generous with his time. We discussed the number of toned dollars now vs “back in the day.” His insights were interesting.
Gorgeous coin.
That was a really fun book.
I had never seen such beautiful dollars. I had a couple of signed editions, once-upon-a-time.
I have to look around and see if i can turn them up.
It's about time to have another look !
I still have my copy even though I haven't collected Morgans in 20 years. The book is awesome. I would love to build a set of solid colors like he had.
I could, but a little busy right now with Easter and everything. I'll try to comply as soon as I can. The photo's aren't that great since I'm doing them with a cell phone.

I don’t own a Morgan or Peace dollar but I’m going to read this over my next vacation. Thanks for posting this

Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......
I have Wayne Millers plate coin the 1881-S PL MS66 from his 1st edition book that is a looker. Miller has an eye for the nice ones for sure.
You don't own a Peace dollar?
For SHAME!
amazing coin! A flip through Wayne's book is always enjoyable. Thanks for sharing

Yup. Pretty happy.
Pick out a Purdy one.
Still have that book, one of my all time favorites! He has a nice section in the book there about nicely toned Morgans, which some ill-informed people seem to think didn't exist before the late 1990's.

Well... that did it... I just ordered the book (a signed copy)..... Did not realize my library was lacking this reference.... Not any more... Cheers, RickO
Well, I found some time, and here are the (somewhat crummy) photo's that were requested. This Reverse looks better than this, I think the light was too bright.

Here's the view of the entire coin, holder and all.

Dmpl?
Do share. Would love to hear his insights.
It is a solid PL, but the photo's I've recently sent looks like a different coin! It's short of DMPL as someone questioned but still a real nice coin, better than these last few photo's would indicate. Here's another one I took at the same time as the first photo.

I knew someone would ask. It’s been long enough that I probably don’t recall what he said exactly. I’d rather not speak for him.
Awesome! I like that holder, too.

It remains one of the most-treasured books in my library . . . . .

It's a nice coin, but reverse does not even look PL. I won't buy many old holdered DMPL unless I can see them in hand. So many one siders ended up in holders then.
You're right Wabbit, but in the most recent photo's even the obverse doesn't look PL. I was kind of shocked to see how poor those came out. I might try to do the reverse again under better light. I rushed the most recent ones as didn't have much time and one of the forum members requested an image of the reverse. I'm doing them with a cell phone with no special light. Stay tuned!

Very cool. That is a special type of treasure to me.
