It's sad when people have to find ways to talk down one's elite play so their guy becomes better. Whatever happened to just enjoying the dominance you view?

Its called sports talk for a reason. Everyone having the same opinion would just be some huge circle jerk and its not like anyone is here saying Lebron isn't one of the greats so there's no reason to go overboard with it. Some guys would rank him 1st,some lower and there's nothing wrong with that. Not to mention the guy's comment that brought up Lebron needing more rings was made close to 2 weeks ago.

I was only able to watch the second quarter. it still confuses me why the Cavs don't use Lebron more on the high post and why the Cavs continue to be slow in transition.

another thing that comes to mind, and I'm not complaining, is why Lebron's size/strength is "ruled" against him by the Officials. whenever he drives he gets fouled, but since he is strong enough to muscle through the contact without it affecting him the Ref's don't whistle. smaller players get fouled in the same manner, but since they aren't as big/strong as Lebron they are more affected by the contact. I don't know if that makes sense, but it's how I interpret things.

there were two plays that the Ref's looked at in game one, both involving Stephenson on James. in the first he raked him across the nose/face and appeared to be going at the ball. in the second, he slammed him on top of the head with a forearm and knocked him down. there was a technical on that but no flagrant on either.

there have been other plays where the Ref's apparently have swallowed their whistles. yesterday, Oladipo drove into JR Smith and knocked him to the ground --- either a charge or a blocking foul, and no whistle. all this took place at home for the Cavs, on it will be worse if the Refs continue as they have been. they have allowed very rough play on both sides to go unchecked.

Come on keets! James gets away with more push-offs driving the lane than he gets no called fouls.

And on the "rake across the face in game 1".....he wasn't even touched on the face. The replay clearly showed that.

He came out from the tip and just totally dominated Indy on offense,if i recall correctly he had the first 16 points in the game by either team.I don't think any of his teammates took a single shot during that stretch. He actually got the benefit of the whistles with Oladipo getting called for two fouls right away that sat him for quite awhile. When he finally got back in the game,he immediately got his 3rd because Love jumped into him on a three attempt. Cleveland definitely got some home calls from the refs last night.
As for the size comment, its always gonna go both ways with a freak of nature like that. Look at Shaq's early years, look at Gronk at times. There is always going be times where the bulk works against them. In Lebron's case,he greatly gets the benefit from the refs so i don't see why you could think he doesn't. He's the best player in basketball and gets the star treatment.
I do agree on that Sabonis knockdown on him. Chris Webber who called the game tried explaining it as Sabonis just going for the ball with one hand but that other arm around Lebron's neck then throwing him down should have definitely been a Flagrant 2 instead of 1.

Players who are bigger and stronger (Shaq, King James, etc.) always get mauled and get no calls.

immediately got his 3rd because Love jumped into him on a three attempt

I didn't see the first two Oladipo fouls but I did see the third on the Love three --- erik, if you're watching the NBA you'd know the Refs will make that call every time, EVERY TIME, it had nothing to do with where the game was played.

one thing about this series, James is too quick off the dribble/pivot and too strong for Oladipo to cover, and Oladipo is too quick when he drives with a running start for almost anyone. for the Cavs to win they need to neutralize Oladipo on offense without letting him get a running start. on defense they need to switch him to Lebron on the post or at the arc.

that "jump into the defender to get bailed out by the refs" move is the offensive equivalent to flopping on defense. I know it gets called 99% of the time but its still all the same. There was a play in another game this past weekend where the shooter spread his legs out while taking a three and got the call when the only contact was his foot hitting the defender's leg. People spend so much time complaining about flopping yet never mention this.
Lebron definitely uses his size to his advantage with Oladipo covering him but that game last night look looked like Cleveland was getting some home-cookin as far as the refs where concerned especially early. Oladipo is arguably one of the best backcourt defenders in the NBA,led the league in steals & probably will make 1st team All-defensive, and got called for 3 fouls in like his first 4-5 minutes of play. I doubt that happened to him once all season. I wouldn't be surprised if Indy gets the make-up calls from their refs in their home game tomorrow. I'm not saying Lebron went to the refs after game one but i wouldn't be surprised if the Cavs coaching staff did.
NBA refs are easy to manipulate between games when the calls aren't going a team/player's way. Just look at Giannis complaining about fouling out of overtime in game one when in reality the kid should have 6-7 fouls in that game. He whined publicly and got the benefit of the whistles on three different plays where he should have been called for charging early in game two.

I couldn't agree more! that foul (jumping into the defender) is pure crap! I call it the Paul Pearce(sp) move. When I played Basketball it was a given that if you jump (straight) up (weather on defense or offence) you have the right to come down. Faking a guy up then going under him to get the foul is PURE CRAP!!!! Should be an offensive foul.

  • erikthredderikthredd Posts: 9,035 ✭✭✭✭✭

Paul definitely turned it into a go-to move. I'm not saying they should all be offensive fouls just the obvious ones.

What did you think about the game last night? I think Indy was a bit shell-shocked seeing Lebron & the Cavs come out like they did. It worked perfectly and put Indy's best player on the bench.

I’ve listed Russell on my All- Time NBA Team and needed a flak jacket on these very boards. You are brave

The guy played at the level he did for so long winning championship after championship all while he was repeatedly getting death threats. The guy was incredible,I just wished I was around to have seen him play.

Quote from Bill Russell about Wilt Chamberlain. I'm not sure what else anyone needs to know?

"People on the outside want to make snap evaluations, judgments about what makes a player, an athlete, a man based on criteria that is viewed through their own perceptions," Russell said. "What I know is that from the very first time I ever stepped onto a court and had to play against Wilt, I knew that nothing less than my very best would ever be enough.

"The first time we played, I realized he was bigger, stronger, faster, quicker, more athletic than me, so it was going to take some kind of plan just to survive. Later on there was the night that he set the NBA record by getting 55 rebounds against us. As we used to say back then about the Houston police: He was kicking asses and taking names. And you know he did that a lot."

I'm talking more of the 45-55 degree lean-ins trying get contact when the defender is a foot away.

Horry has more than 6 rings???!!!

Robert Horry has won seven Championship rings with three different Teams, so the evidence is indisputable, he is better than Michael Jordan if you apply that flawed logic.

Dennis Rodman has 5 rings. Just one away from being as great as MJ. He did after all help Jordan win 3 straight titles

Rodman did win 7 straight rebounding titles at 6’ 7””. Pretty remarkable.

What's more surprising is not making an All Star team when his Bulls three-peated. NBA Leading rebounder while also a top 3 defensive player but no spots for him?

I always liked Rodman as a player......until he went to N. Korea. I know it's all about getting attention, but I still don't like it.

He was really good at getting into players heads. I forget now who it was, but there was a player on the Heat or Orlando that he could get so mad that the guy would go after him and get kicked out of the game. Anybody else remember that?

Jon, stop and think of what you posted --- that you liked Rodman as a player but didn't like him as a player AFTER HIS CAREER WAS OVER because he went to NK. nothing changed about his playing career.

I am a LeBron GOAT guy, but in basketball where a single top player or two suck up most of the oxygen, rings matter a lot.

  • keetskeets Posts: 25,351 ✭✭✭✭✭

yeah they do, of course, but it's important to realize that one player can't win a Championship. I have a scenario for you which compares "rings" for a player --- right now, the debate about LeBron James and Michael Jordan is a fun one, discussions about who is better based on statistics. they are surprisingly close. already the talk is that if Lebron sets records it'll be because he plays longer than MJ. does that mean if he were to end up with the same number or more Championships that MJ would still be better because he did it in less time??

it is maddening. I think it's better just to savor watching James now because we can and remember how much fun it was to watch Jordan all those years ago. I do the same with Oscar Robertson, he was so much fun to watch and now to remember.
