How did this occur on this Buffalo Nickel reverse? Is it a clash, prestrike damage to planchet or perhaps both? All opinions welcome.

Is it the surface between the rear legs and down by the s in cents? That could be a rusted die...Cheers, RickO

I thought that until I see the anomaly in front of the legs and above the "rusted look" behind the legs and into the "S" in Cents. Perhaps both a rusted die and damaged planchet or possibly a clashed die.

I don't think it's either of those points.
I have always called it die deterioration, from older dies wearing out.
