Steve hasn't decided on prices yet, or whether or not to break a box for packs, though I suspect this morning he will have some emails and voicemails to sort through. The one box we are saving for a break at the National - we will have all the details on the break several weeks before the show and start selling slots then.
I think the last break by Just Collect was a box break by "pack" - that's honestly the absolute worst way to do it, because there's virtually no way to have a "hit" unless you get a Jordan RC AND it gets a 9. Virtually every other HOFer in a 10 is a loss on pack price, and I think there's maybe only two other cards that in a 10 cover the pack price? Jabbar sticker and Johnny Moore, maybe Dominique in 10 is right on the margin?
Might I make a suggestion on how to do it differently...
Do it like a set break, 143 slots. The packs get opened live and people get all the cards of their player (3-4 of each). The benefits of that are:
1) Price - comes way down per slot, and gives more opportunity for participation.
2) Hits - it makes for one "big winner" slot certainly, but it also gives some additional opportunity for hits. With 3+ sets per box, a trio of nice Barkley/Ewing/Malone etc. , with maybe one being a 9 or 10, makes it pretty near even on the slot price and a 10 would easily cover it. 3 nice Jordan stickers ungraded cover, a 9 Jabbar sticker would cover, you get the jist.
I realize it's "easier" to only have to sell 36 packs, but risk reward of opening a pack is so terrible I'm sure it keeps others besides me from having any interest in joining. It's just paying to say you opened a pack, and if I recall it took them a while to eventually sell all the packs.
143 slots is not that tough especially if you start early, and gives many more opportunities to get a hit especially if the box ends up pretty well centered.
If PSA would do some sort of grading special on anything from the box, they get to grade more cards beyond just possibly the Jordans. Win win for everyone, with multiple people possibly making out.
Or, go even further and make 468 slots. The lower the slot price, the better opportunity for hits, with a virtual guarantee of 6-7 Jordan winners without the grading, and potential for some well centered HOFers that make 9s also being hits.
Again, getting to 143 would not be hard and I suspect with some pretty minimal effort the 468 could get filled well before Cleveland. Most of the folks that would consider buying a pack almost certainly would spend money on slots, and the lower the slot price the more people that would be interested to get involved.
Do it live with a big "draft board" of winners at the show, could really be a lot of fun.
Breaking a box by pack the way the other guys did it is pretty much a yawner.
Being that box #1 is what Steve decided will be offered as a break at the National I see no other way than offering it as a pack break. Opening the two packs with Jordan on top is equivalent to killing a unicorn.

I will relentlessly heckle anyone who knowingly opens a pack with a Jordan on top. LOL
Those packs are worth at least $10K, right? The chances of finding a raw pack with a Jordan showing these days are next to impossible - as all the ones we've seen lately are wrapped in authenticated boxes. PSA has only authenticated 7 of these. PSA 10s go for $20K; surely sitting next to a piece of gum for over 30 years significantly decreases the odds.

My two cents...
We're going to do the break where the owners of the 36 packs can do what they want - leave them sealed, submit to PSA for grading, or open them. Trying to keep this as simple as possible.
We will start selling slots weeks before the National, then save a few spots to be sold at the show. Yes, it won't be a friendly price point where many can participate, but we offer a lot of other items at our booth that are affordable, like daily specials.
Ray Schulte, who does the PR for the National, called me this week asking us if we wanted to do the break on the main stage in the breakers pavillion, which this year is in the center of the show in the corporate area. Steve and I talked it over, and we feel we should do it at our booth. After all, we're also in the corporate area.

maybe 7 or 8 years ago, there was a box break from this forum. i bought 2 packs. Got a Jordan in the middle of the first pack (BGS 9 is how it turned out), but then got greedy and dumb and opened the 2nd pack and got a bunch of nothing. They were $250/pack. Wonder what they would go for now!
Also, I remember that there were 4 Jordan packs in that break. Anyone else on that one?
Yes, I was in that one. I had a pack with Jordan sticker on back. Pack graded an 8. I sold it to a board member days before the 'Jordan Buyers Group' went nuts a couple of years ago. Hmmm. Maybe some insider trading on that one. Haha.

I'd still be interested in doing a break by the pack of one of the other boxes.
Reed, would you be willing to PM me what you guys might be asking for one of the other boxes?
After I bought these boxes, I got back to the office and then left for home a few days later, and a few days before we published the story. I know we were in discussion to sell a couple boxes before I left. Since Steve is the one who sets the prices on unopened, I'd contact him.

I understand why it wouldn't be done as I had proposed, it's more slots so it's more work, etc. And obviously the two packs with Jordans on top complicates that since those packs are so rare and valuable.
If the "hook" is to join the break with basically a 1 in 18 shot at one of those, that certainly appeals to a number of people and makes this certainly better than the last one. I don't have any doubt it will sell out however it's done.
But if you decided to break another box, there's a better way to do it to involve more people and have more "winners".
I traded emails with Steve yesterday. The "common" boxes of 86 Fleer are not yet available to pack out. I inquried about the 1972 Topps 5/6 box and we could potentially do a break at $468.75 per pack.

Did Steve say what the 86 boxes are priced at?
He did not, but he did say there were only 2 left, so I presume he has been receiving serious interest in full boxes.

I purchased 2 from that break, and then three from the two boxes we broke later in 2012. They are still safely sealed in the collection.

Bounce,
In the way you are proposing doing it, I don't like that idea that one person would get all of the Jordan rookies or all of the Jordan stickers.
