1937 Wheaties DiMaggio run and 1935-36 Gehrig Wheaties Panels - NEW SCANS

1951WheatiesPremium1951WheatiesPremium Posts: 6,363 ✭✭✭✭✭

I just love the way these look - especially when it's a well cut copy. I know most probably aren't slabbed, too, but the pop count is low, I've always heard they were somewhat scarce and I really think they look sharper once in a slab. I'm still kind of new here on CU but I'm trying to share a little more - maybe someone sees something they appreciate but I just like looking all your stuff so here's some of mine. So, I hope you enjoy looking at what I consider some of the nicer looking collectibles ever made. And please post any you have (and whether they may be available ;) )

I'm still looking for a nice, clean 'full frame' example of a 1937 Wheaties Series 3 Lou Gehrig (Fielding) and would also like to find the 1938 Wheaties Series 10 Joe DiMaggio panel to complete the run. I've tried to shop carefully and be patient looking for the 'full card' with high end eye appeal. Here's what I have so far (the 3 raws are off to be graded, as well, but I'll update the scans of them slabbed when I can):

1935 Wheaties Series 1 - Lou Gehrig

1936 Wheaties Series 4 - Lou Gehrig

1937 Wheaties Series 6 - Joe DiMaggio

1937 Wheaties Series 7 - Joe DiMaggio

1937 Wheaties Series 8 - Joe DiMaggio

1937 Wheaties Series 9 - Joe DiMaggio

These are the two I don't have. They pop up every once in a while and I keep my eyes peeled but if you have a nice copy of either you no longer want, reach out!

Great collection! I agree with you, when they are well cut the Wheaties panels are just beautiful.

Not cut perfectly but I can fix that if I really want. Chances are slim I will since it's beautiful as is. And now, it's mine.

I think that's the difference between collecting to enjoy vs for profit. These cost a decent sum as they're solid copies but it's the artistry and imagery that get me. As much as they're cut off a cereal box, they represent to me some of the most beautiful era specific cards - period. While I'd love to have the 1933 Goudey in my collection someday, I always thought if you took the text off that card you'd have know idea who it was - at all. For set collectors, fine. But these Wheaties cards have a photo quality image (in every series), they're gradable, stunning to look at (even more so in hand) and scarce enough to have value. Greg Morris auctioned off a nice raw copy of each not too far back that went for an astronomical sum. I happen to think mine are nicer, and passed on bidding on any but the Series 3, which went for way more than I had. That one WAS nicer than my new one (scans below) and had the white extended 'Wheaties' logo bottom. It went for over 800 (an closer to 900) if memory serves. The series one I think mine is nicer and his fetched almost 500. The series four was rough - like mine - and still got about 250.

Very well put, Tim. I've got the same kind of approach to and appreciation for this great hobby. It's never about the profit when I seek out a card, but rather something aesthetic or nostalgic about it. I love the look of these cards. Thanks for sharing!

    @ahopkins - thanks man

And I'll also say that the hobby NEEDS for profit collectors too! They unearth new finds, grade cards and take more risk. The theme of my collection is the Yankees. Heavy emphasis on Mantle. I don't need 9 or 10. Just sharp to the eye. Here's another fun rare piece...

From my research, this is a very specific and short time available collectible (hi res scan below). Though it's been called the 'Holiday Inn Promo', I'm pretty sure that's wrong. It was only available for 1957, it's from the Yankees and it was made as an attempt to keep up with overwhelming demand for autograph requests after the triple crown season of '56. I know this because the gentleman who sold it to me wrote the Yankees himself as a boy in 1957. And I have the original, postmarked envelope from the Yankees, as well as several email exchanges and a PayPal receipt to match! It's not part of a 'Team Issue' because there's no one else in the set. It's a 5x7 high gloss photo. Clearly, this exact image was re used for the 1958 Holiday Inn Photocard and Postcard. I've been meaning to confirm this with his Herb Gluck autobiography; there's a section where he talks about how just about every business venture he went into sucked except for the Holiday Inn in Joplin, Missouri (and affiliated area businesses run my the same guy) and some of the different photo shoots, including Topps cards and how he hated two specific ones (he wouldn't reveal) where he was obviously hung over. Gotta love Mickey Charles!

Anyway, it's pretty cool and I'm thinking they're also pretty rare, especially to have with the knowledge of what it actully is, the envelope AND the provenance... :)

It's possible Wiry Dan's Electric Baseball Game may have lifted the image from the 1937 Wheaties Series 6 card, it's also similar as to pose and facial expression and giving an artist a box of Wheaties as inspiration seems about right... :D

    Tim,

Thanks for posting these Premiums. As you mentioned they are really nice to look at, especially in hand. I used to look for these at the card shows when I was working the HOF set 10 years ago.

    Thanks for sharing.

Thank you both for the kind words. I have a bunch of standard baseball cards BUT between T206 and 1952 Topps are tons of great baseball players and very little standardization. By that, I mean 'cards' came in all shapes and sizes and were made by so many different companies. So, I have always felt you can and should trust your eyes over other people's opinions of what looks good.

    So true Tim.

That Wheaties card must've been a big hit with the kids - you've got quite a collection there.

Besides some Wheaties stuff, I do have a large "run" of Quaker cereal Babe Ruth premiums.

One that eludes me if due to it always costing way more than I'm willing to go.

    Hiya Tim

    The hat.

When I see it, they want way too much for it. There's one on eBay right now - I think they want over a grand.

There's a few I have never seen - one is the auto ball - there's a "box" alone for sale on eBay in poor condition and the guy wants way too much for it - has been for sale forever. Also, have never seen the glove for sale.

    Mike - which one?

Bumping an old thread with a fun new pickup.

This is one of those items that Is totally in my wheelhouse. It’s already kind of rare since it’s from 1940 and then you factor in that some have been cut down to produce singles. Then on top of that, figure most kids cut across the dotted line and therefore ones that are this ‘complete’ even enter another stratosphere of rare and I just felt like I should purchase and preserve this one. It’s definitely NOT perfect and it definitely could be improved (in grade, significantly) by trimming it.

And that’s not going to happen while I am the owner.

Well the run is finished...and in delightful fashion.

The full panel is a very tough get; the three individual stamps have long been gradable (with and without their text) and on top of that, according to the original intructions, you were supposed to have cut these along the dotted lines. I consider myself incredibly lucky to have the fullest size possible for all seven panels. Condition varies greatly though I think the eye appeal remains pretty consistently high. While SGC still has some more work to do with it's population report, the Series 7 & 8 cards were both highest graded at last check. With four of them SGC graded and now 3 raw (and the different flip generatoins), I am now leaning towards eventually having PSA slab all seven. Without further ado, here's the newest addition - in high resolution - followed by a nice photo of the rest of the run.

Thanks! Best part of hand cut items is you can try to improve the look a little bit and flex some artistic muscle. The top right corner has some brown tape holding it together. So I sort of pulled off on the last vertical (left) when I got there until I can practice and analyze a little better. Still, already sharper I think...
