The possibilities are always tempting. You never know when you'll end up being the lucky collector who cracks open a roll and finds 1964 Kennedys, Franklin half dollars, silver British crowns, Maria Theresa thalers, gold double eagles, Civil War tokens, Feuchtwanger cents, ancient Greek decadrachms, etc.

The industrial sorters do not kick out silver. They count and roll. I've heard from people who work at these places that they see silver get dumped in but aren't allowed to touch it, it goes right back into rolls, into boxes, onto pallets, and into storage before eventually getting shipped out.

That's not entirely accurate. N.F. String and son is one of the largest coin sorting operations in the country. Their industrial machines kick out all silver coins just like coinstar, just like the small coin counters in your bank lobby, just like all the pop and candy vending machines, just like all the toll booth coin machines etc. They sort out the silver and sell it separately as bullion. I have purchased rolls of 90% directly from them many times. You will not be seeing any silver in freshly rolled Brinks wrappers either.

Sorry, but until you actually post an invoice, I simply don't believe this.

Further, NF String doesn't process much actual coinage themselves, the bulk of coinage is processed by carriers like Loomis, Garda, etc. They may use NF String rolls and they may use NF String machines, but acceptance/rejection of silver coins takes time for the machine to do and introduces another variable that could break the machines. At the end of the day, it's simply not profitable to sort out the silver coins for an industrial operation, when you factor in downtime, material and labor costs, and upkeep/maintenance costs.

Just one last anecdote, I've searched north of $1,000,000 in halves and found more silver than would ever be possible if what you say was true. Further, I also live less than 2 hours from Harrisburg, PA, their headquarters.

By the way, one of my best scores was off a bank coin counter that let me buy the bags off them. As a general rule of hand, I'd say 75% of retail machines won't reject silver.

I don't dispute you found silver in the past (we all have) but I know you haven't been finding it from Loomis, Garda, NF String etc. Certainly not in the last several years. As for the newer machines sorting these coins out it's quick and simple, does it all by weight and not size just like the coinstar and toll booth machines. This is the reason you find silver in them. Go try to run a silver quarter through any machine manufactured in the last 10 years, I don't care what kind of machine it will reject that quarter every time. No need to send you an invoice for NF string purchases, go look at their ebay store, they are actively selling rolls of 90% (among other things like chucky cheese tokens, bulk foreign coins etc.)

It's a numbers game, you churn volume, you will find silver, plain and simple. I've got the rep here to back up what I say, I've found 4 boxes of half dollars with more than 100 silvers in them, with the best having 200 silvers, the majority of which were 90% silver. I know what I'm talking about.

I can't seem to find an NF String eBay account. Link me please. You do know that just because they're in double-crimped NF String rolls doesn't mean they're from NF String, right?

I'm not talking about what you found coin roll hunting years ago. You will not find silver from any of the big carriers rolls in this day and age period. NF String sells on ebay under the handle webcoins, here is a link to their ebay store. Purchase from them you will see on your paypal receipt NF String and sons or better yet just call the number at the top of their store page and ask them directly. http://stores.ebay.com/webcoins/

And to your other claim that NF String doesn't process coins well go here: http://www.nfstring.com/coinProcessing.php

    Coin Processing
    N. F. String will process your coins and, unlike anyone else in the industry, we have a very expedient ACH system once your coins have been picked up. Whether in bags or bins, your coins will be picked up and accurately processed. Contact us for details.

Hm, I'll eat my words then, I guess they do find it worthwhile to process and sort it out.

I also never said that they don't sort change, I said they don't sort all of it. Find couriers who process their own change and use them. You think NF String handles all the coin in the US? C'mon dude.

Plain and simple you can find silver in boxes.

Off topic a bit but several weeks ago they had 90% quarter rolls listed in the "collectables" category. This was when ebay gave out that 20% off coupon for everything but coins, gift cards etc. So the coupon worked, they sold several hundred rolls in about 2 hours. I see they have them again but moved into coin category now. Shame because ebay just dropped another 15% off coupon.

I never disputed finding silver in boxes but all the big players are sorting now. IMO it's a complete waste of time unless hunting customer rolled coins. Cheap entertainment I suppose.

My last attempt was 10 years ago - $500 faces and nothing. Not a verry profitable use of my time.

with some of the calculated thing on this thread I understand the reason some men don't date. Geez. (just kidding) but seriously. We go to coin shows and to dinner and to walk the park, don't have to always be calculating the cost of it. I hope you find something interesting. At least your not at a bar or wasting time watching the "stupid" box. Enjoy and best of luck in your search.

I agree! Hobbies are, in my opinion, an important part of a healthy lifestyle, and it is not a cost/benefit equation. Unless someone was going to quit their day job to search rolls, then a little roll searching can be good for your mental health, whatever the results.

If you want to get them into the hands of potential YNs, use a stack of mixed dates to buy a box of Girl Scout cookies.

I didn't know they date cookies -- thin mints and those other things are popular. This year date cookies, next year fig bars?

Sounds like Roll Hunting is a bunch of wasted time. I wonder if anyone has considered asking everyone they see for help with Gas, A Meal , Surgery , Cab Fare, etc. Sounds like that would get you a better return than a career in Bank Teller harassment.

$8 is too effing much for a pack of something that kills you, then the idiot spends nearly $48 in same and you think he has whats coming to him since he probably stole them somewhere.

Rolls of circulated Bicentennial halves are fetching $16 and up on eBay. If they can be shipped cheaply enough, it might be possible to clear a few bucks per roll.

$16 a roll?! Dang! I guess I'll spend regular money the next time on those lottery tix! Let's see... about $50 worth remaining = 5 rolls = $80 value, less $7 priority small box = net $73 = almost 50% profit....... (before eBay fees).

Not about to start with eBay just yet, so anyone on the Forum want them at $15/roll?

  • DBSTrader2DBSTrader2 Posts: 3,485 ✭✭✭✭

Last call! Or these 135 super-collectible Bicentennial halves get rolled & deposited at the local bank! Don't miss out! ;)
