Back into the breach - Gradeflation ? - Early Walkers

shorecollshorecoll Posts: 5,445 ✭✭✭✭✭

I have started putting together a set of early date walkers mostly in VF-ish. I have noticed that very few of the slabbed early date branch mint walkers in AU by either service look even close to AU. Is this really strike or the nemesis...gradeflation?

    It's gradeflation.
AU50 in early Walkers is the VF35/XF40 of twenty years ago.

Sadly, this does appear to have happened to some extent... although lately, it seems to be tightening again.... Although these are general perceptions, so many have noticed it, that it adds to the validity.... Cheers, RickO

It is not always gradeflation... There is a distinct design difference in the 1923 and earlier WLH coins. The earlier dates just do not have the detail that later dates have... One just cannot grade a 1936 and 1920 WLH by the same standard because the skirt lines and overall relief is different.

Appreciate the differences. I would recommend looking at the remaining lustre and the strike characteristics of the mints.
