The coin is AU something. I'd guess 55, but a grade one up or down woudln't surprise me. MS would.

For me, the easiest way to judge a PCGS mint state coin from an AU one is not to look at the high points of the devices, but rather to look for wear impairing the luster in the fields. Generally speaking, an AU coin will have it, and a MS coin won't.

This coin has obvious field wear (along with high point wear) and thus will grade AU.

To clarify how EAC net grading works, the procedure is to state what the sharpness grade is and then give some detail as to the problems. THEN a net grade from pricing and condition census information is provided.

Collectors can certainly debate how much the reduction in the sharpness grade should be. If the problems are not too bad the reduction is often one grade, say from VF to Fine or EF to VF. When the problems are more severe, the deduction can be two grade levels or more. For example, a badly corroded half cent or cent might with EF sharpness in some of the sharper areas might be knocked down Good or even About Good, if the environmental damage is bad enough.

Despite the tirades written in response my previous posts, I believe that this system is a reasonable way to proceed in estimating values and ranking grades for damaged coins. The EAC net grade system is not intended for two digit slab grading. It is a system for collectors to get their hands around the prices and relative states of preservation for damaged coins.

You have described net grading very well.

So, I'm going to NET GRADE the OP's TPGS About Uncirculated Morgan dollar XF-40. While it has the sharpness of a mid-range AU, I'll need to deduct points for a poor, unoriginal surface, generally acceptable yet below average eye-appeal, and major marks! LOL, pure FOLLY!
