PNNA '18 - alternative success
This past weekend was the annual PNNA in Tukwila. I had been looking forward to this show for a while now. The plan was to work a half day Friday, then cut out to go to go huntin'. Well, not everything goes as planned.
After much troubles, I arrived at the community center very close to 4pm. So much for first pick or cathcing up with members here. There was much activity still taking place, so I made my way to any available table. My list this year was very short, and in the 3 hours I walked around, I only walked away with one silver bullion coin. This is usually a good buying show for me, but at this point this show was shot. I left at closing already anxious for next year, as the rest of my weekend was pretty much scheduled.
Fast forward to Sunday, a buddy of mine contacts me early in the morning wanting to go the Show. Both he and his kid have recently become very interested in coin collecting, so I had mentioned the show a few days prior. I got the ok from the boss, and we made our way out. At this point, it was about showing them around their first coin show. And what better day than Sunday.
We arrived about 1100 Sunday. Ex- ANA president Walt was up front hosting a YN treasure hunt. My friends kid was in! First stop, penny press. We got our PNNA cents and he checked off #1. We entered the bourse, and began his hunt. The other stop were far from easy. One was between two show cases with material on top. Its all about the hunt!
Of course, the youngster was given many free coins, tokens, and the like along the way. The excitement in him to see 100, and even 1700 year old money made the show.
What was even better was the number of YNs on the floor. I saw about a half dozen YNs participating in the treasure hunt. A few others too young to participate were out looking around with their parents. I would also add that on Friday, there were a handful of honest looking teenage kids on the floor buying; knocking out their lists.
After walking the floor several times, we were pretty much pooped, and called it a day. The YN checked out with Walt on the way out to claim his prize. Much kudos to him for hosting the treasure hunt.
All in all, this year, for me, was about sharing the hobby and witnessing the future of it. All dealers I spoke with had a wonderful show. Everything was grand!
Oh, and I bought a coin Sunday

Nice report and way to go with inspiring a YN!
Great report... and that V nickel is very, very nice..... Glad to hear about the young people attending. I always saw young people at shows.... those that say they do not, are likely too busy looking at coins and talking to dealers... Cheers, RickO
Great to share the coin disease ... er, I mean the passion! .... with the kids.
Nice nick too ..
Nice report - sounds like a good time was had by all.
Thanks for the report. Walt does an excellent job with the YN treasure hunt. And I got to meet @Swampboy on Saturday
