My understanding is once a medal is smaller than a U.S. half dollar, it is referred to as a "medallet." However, I have never seen anything definitive on the subject.

The convention that I've seen is, in terms of diameter, less than 25.4mm is a "medalet," and over 80mm is a "medallion," while everything in between is a "medal." That being said, I always use the term medal for consistency, regardless of diameter.
