Time for another Ebay seller rant...

There's no need to reply to this, I just need to vent...

I sell a garden variety 1981 proof set on Ebay; it closed earlier tonight. Not a great set, but I am trying to simplify my life and anyway it does have $1.91 in face value. It finally sells for the whopping sum of $3.70 (plus $3.50 shipping). After it closes, I get a message from the winning bidder that reads "Please cancel this bid I didn't realize the magatude [sic] of this bid".

I check his rating on ebay and it turns out he has had 19, that's right 19 bid retractions in the last year. How is he still being allowed by the Ebay wizards to bid on anything?!?

That's it, thanks for listening, I feel better now... :)

Buyers like that need to be reported in order for eBay to act. You do have that option to do so. Venting your anger on a public forum will not resolve that issue.

Don't feel bad. I have a lot of proof sets up for bid on eBay containing $131.68 in face value plus free shipping. Had someone make an offer or $50.00! Their feedback was private, I obviously declined the offer and blocked the bidder.

Since this is at top of page.(Best to "vent" on the US coin forum :) )... It happens from time to time but not often. It's the cost of doing business. Just block and move on.

Sounds like some covfefe of a word implying a Make America Great Again attitude!

  • THIS ONE IS EASY. WHY HE IS ALLOWED TO DO THIS TO YOU? 19 OTHERS DUMPED IT ON TO THE NEXT GUY INSTEAD OF DOING THE RIGHT THING AND TAKING UP THE FIGHT TO NOT LET HIM GET AWAY WITH IT. SO WILL THERE BE A #20?

I agree that it is time to take some action with Ebay. I gave him until tomorrow to finish the purchase. If he doesn't, I'll take action. Thanks for the comments.

Not sure WHY you would want him to finish the purchase.....seriously.
Just more problems waiting for you. He finishes the purchase, let's it arrive, returns it as SNAD, and negs you. That is a very likely scenario. Is it worth it? Especially for $3.70?

Oh yeah, if done as a SNAD, who pays for the return postage? Again, worth pushing for it?

I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment

    I agree with Bochiman.
My question is "WHY"? Good grief, don't let this move another inch for you. Cancel the guys bid, Block him from ever bidding again, then notify Ebay and count yourself fortunate you only lost $1.91 sales. If you force him to accept the sale, you've opened another door for him to irritate you further and no matter what it's not going to end well for you. Ebay has proven many many times over they are Buyer oriented not seller oriented and you can bet your last Proof set he is NOT going to give you positive feedback. Sometimes you just have to cut your losses and run. Get away quickly while you can.

One final update: I did cancel the purchase (he sent a second email in which he said he would pay for the set, then he sent a third asking that the bid be cancelled), did put him on my list of blocked bidders and asked Ebay why he was still be allowed to bid after so many bid retractions, and why Ebay hadn't picked on his habits beforehand. No particular response from R=Ebay...

And, by this morning, he had now undertaken 29 bid retractions, up from 19 the day before.

There are a million stories in the big city... Smoe folks just get overexcited and bid on too much, or an anticipated windfall doesn't come in. I deal with those inevitable eBayers with kindness, then immediately block the crap out of them.
