Coin dealers drive me crazy

A coin dealer looked at this 1880 o/s. It's georgious. He advised to not send this raw coin in for grading after her told me that it was an EDS. But offered me $45 bucks for it. If I decide to sell it on an auction with say Heritage. Is it worth it to do it or will the graders and auction house eat up any gain in what I can get for it. He said it was AU. I'm pretty sure my Dad pulled it from the Treasury sell off.

These come in at least 2 varieties. There is a weak and a strong. This coin looks to be the weaker version (if in fact there's anything in the center of the mint mark). I can't see it.

If the coin is that nice it's a slam dunk for encapsulation however, verify it is O/S and try to send it "economy" with other coins. Call PCGS to see if they need extra for the attribution. I think there's still a special on that.

    So, it’s an 1882???????

Q: When does a collector become a numismatist?

A: The year they spend more on their library than their coin collection.

A numismatist is judged more on the content of their library than the content of their cabinet.

Ahh, maybe that's why I can't see the evidence, saw O/S and didn't even read the year.

Please do us and yourself a favor and post photos of the entire coin. 1880?

You sure that's a o/s? Cannot tell from your picture and if so its VERY weak. Weak variety doesn't sell for much more over the straight 1882o and in AU condition you would pay more to ship and slab then what greysheet bid puts the price at.

The whole worlds off its rocker, buy Gold™.

I feel the same toward politicians.

OP states coin is 1880. I'm only familiar with the 1882 O/S. Please post whole coin photos.

  • These are the best pics I can get with the cheap system I use. It is an 1882...sorrry. What do you guys think it's worth?

My grandpa was 4 years old in 1882. At least that's what he told me. Who knows for sure?

The coin dealer is correct. I don't know about EDS from the photo, but it is circ and I wouldn't pay $45 for it based on the photos. I don't see the O/S. If it is there, the coin could be worth a bit more.

It would cost more to encapsulate it than the coin is worth. Unless you have a much larger collection, you cannot consign a single $75 coin to Heritage.

I do not see an O/S in any of those pictures... of course, it could be just the lighting, but I do not see it. Overall, I would say it is not worth sending in.... if you are not selling, but just for your collection, then maybe you want to slab it for posterity. Up to you.... Cheers, RickO
