Now THIS is monster toning!!!!!
I've had this 1971 Eisenhower (Ike) dollar mounted in a belt buckle for nearly 40 years.
To mount the coin in the belt buckle, you would first lay a disk of leather into the mount, followed by the coin and finally a clear plastic disk. Then the mount would screw tight onto the large buckle's housing and firmly hold these three layers together. Kind of like this:
Since I haven't worn the belt buckle in 40 years (it's soooo tacky, I am embarrassed to even show it here), I took it apart. While the obverse is still in satisfactory condition, I was surprised to find that the reverse is coated with a thin green waxy layer, as shown in the picture.
Anybody know the chemistry between the clad dollar and the leather that would form this coating?
Toning can't get any more monster than this, imo.

Big green monster. Looks like some sort of copper oxide.
Collector, occasional seller
Put that piece of leather on Ebay and someone will be glad to add it to their collection. I'll bet over a dozen folks will be bidding on it for $$. Acetone will take the green off the coin.
leather is notorious for ruining coins with typical dark, unattractive tone due to the very noxious chemicals used in the tanning process.
not attractive IMHO
Why is coin coin in the buckle dated 1972 and the coin out of the buckle dated 1971?
Magicians belt buckle?
Frankenstein!
A: The year they spend more on their library than their coin collection.
A numismatist is judged more on the content of their library than the content of their cabinet.
He said "kind of like this", which I took to mean it was similar, but not the same one.
I did not post a photo of the real belt buckle. I just pulled a similar photo from the Internet.
Sell the buckle, not the coin.
corrosion
Leather is tanned with some nasty chemicals. Peace Roy

That is nasty corrosion due to the chemicals in the leather... same thing happens to cartridges left in belt holders for too long....You can try acetone, but it may need something stronger....Good luck, Cheers, RickO
Interesting but its environmental damage.
