From the photos, it appears the cargo was improperly secured. It shifted on takeoff and breached the cargo door. Someone will end up building bridges to nowhere at a new Tsar Vladimir Gulag Siberian Corrective Facility.

The USPS is launching a full scale internal investigation over the incident.

Who knows, they may be lucky it tumbled out. Might have been tough landing with all that weight in the far end of the tail.

If you didn't read the article, you might have missed that the bars weighted 20Kg each and were found as much as 26 KM from the runway.

I'd love to have somebody drop a 20Kg gold bar in my backyard, I'd even dig a hole to retrieve it if I could keep it. But it could easily have destroyed a house or killed somebody.

As I mentioned in another thread on this issue, I wonder who is guarding the guards.....there are retirement plans all over the runway.... ;) Cheers, RickO

If I ever die, I want a 45lb gold bar to fall from the sky and do me in

    There's worse ways to go.

Imagine someone who desperately needed a 6 figure rare coin and praying for a miracle and then they look in their backyard to find a couple 20kg gold bars fall from the sky.....

Mueller is on his way to investigate ;)

Turns out it wasn't pure gold, but dore a partly refined gold/silver alloy.

So since it's not pure, totally giving up on that whole "hit by a 45 pound ingot way to go" thing.

Unless you're joking, you can't blame this one on the United States Postal Service.
