First of 3 submissions just popped. (Good News!!)

At Long Beach, I submitted 3 separate groups. One Restoration, a nine coin Regular crossover, and a 10 coin Economy crossover. The first just popped. This was the "restoration" submission of a previously PCGS graded coin. (Received at PCGS on 2/27, Total 12 business days!)

Was: 1887 3CN, AU-55. It had what I thought was pretty obvious PVC "green sludge" on the upper left obverse. Looking at photos when I bought it back in 2006, I think it was there in a much more limited fashion even then.

The coin has become a rather expensive coin, (for me), so swimming in my head was the possibility that there might be permanent damage...what would PCGS do to remedy that, if anything....and what happens if it fails to certify again.

I was HOPING that it would certify again at the previous grade: AU-55. That would have been a good result in my mind.

I think the grading fairy sprinkled some fairy dust on me. :)

Hoping the grading fairy stays nearby as the rest go through the system. :)

    I'm happy!

For reference, here's the 2006 photo from DLRC. You know, I'm not sure why I didn't notice it then! The 2018 me would have passed on this coin, since the PVC looks pretty obvious here. (Luster on the coin is better than the photo shows....but I'm still not absolutely convinced it's better than AU-58(?) You say pot-a-to, I say po-tah-to.

Take the victories, and move on... ;)

Exc. result. It looks like pvc more often than not does not cause damage, though I am sure there are a lot of coins permanently affected, not sure what makes the difference.

Is there much increase in value? https://www.davidlawrence.com/rare-coin/172975/

Obverse certainly looks above 55 in the original holder, maybe under-graded to start but I'm not very familiar with 3CN coins but I also agree from those pictures, would never of expected to regrade a 62. Just curious if you cracked it before the restoration resubmit?

Nope, submitted in the holder. Figured that was the only way to go since (maybe?) they would reimburse me if it failed to certify after restoration. (I'm not really clear on that, to be honest).

And I've had crossovers upgrade in the past, so unlike some, I do honestly believe that PCGS grades the coin-in-hand, and not based on what the coin might have previously been graded.

    Missed this....

Surprised you were able to find the original auction! Guess nothing dies on the internet....

As for value, the PCGS price guide, (yeah....I know), says an AU-55 is $675, while an MS-62 is $775. Pretty flat price curve until you get to 64 and higher, but I'm guessing it paid for the restoration.

Congratulations on a nice jump in grade...If the PVC was not 'active', then there should not be any damage... I have seen it go both ways... If it was PVC to begin with... I have seen residues that look like PVC but are some other substance...Cheers, RickO
