    Or you could read Fractional Money by Neil Carothers.

    You will not only learn about the legal tender status of Spanish Colonial pieces until 1857 but about all the monetary laws. One of my favorite items is a chart in the back of the book showing the relative values of silver, gold, and paper around the civil war.
