"Collectable" stuff in or on coins

SkyManSkyMan Posts: 9,493 ✭✭✭✭✭

We had the Murano glass coins posted here recently. Now we've got this, courtesy of the New Zealand Mint, flown Space Shuttle insulation within the coins...

Definitely NOT my cup of tea (not to mention, the shuttle never flew to the Moon). What happened to good old fashioned coins, instead of this "collectable" dreck?

    Shuttle....... Moon!!!

    LOL.

The shuttle was great, but could do nothing beyond low earth orbit. Taking it for a spin around the solar system (or even as high as our communications satellites) is/was pure science fiction. As for the supposed coin, nope.

On the card side, I got a insert card out of a pack of baseball cards, which contained a piece of wire from the "Spacelab" embedded into the card.

    Wow....that is very weird.
    What could be next?
    Celebrity belly-button lint coins?

It looks as if a trend is developing.... must be attempts to hype the market.... there will be those who collect these coin anomalies.... though I doubt purists will be attracted to them. I do not foresee any reaching future high values....Just curio's...Cheers, RickO

Yes, there are a lot of crazy marketing schemes......those types of coins don't interest me nor do they offer good investment potential imho.

    I'll stick to the classics.

If they were smart, they'd put USB connectors on the coins with video game circuitry that might entice at least ONE kid to "try coins." :D

@topstuf ..... Ssshhhhhh..... I can see it now, a three gig, removable memory chip embedded in the reverse, giving the history of coins and price guides..... :D Cheers, RickO

There have been many "made from " medals containing metal from famous ships, bells, spacecraft, etc. Some of them are quite popular (and valuable). At what point the modern stuff becomes over-hyped junk is up to each person to decide. It is easy to see that it might get out of hand, especially as we move from metals being used to create an alloy to bits of debris being pasted onto a coin.

I've seen some of the colored coins and the like at coins shows and it's not for me.
