RE: Response to a PM. The meeting will also have an auction and other typical club activities. I plan to keep my presentation "mercifully brief" - and hope no one falls asleep. :)

Yes, I think they have refreshments and strong coffee.

Also, free copies of a research article on the 1895 silver dollar with be provided. This coordinates with my presentation.

That looks like it is going to be an informative presentation.

Did you also teach this material at the University of Cambridge?

No. It's based on what was learned from Cambridge. It's a clear purposeful approach.

Any materials from the presentation you can share here would be appreciated. The stuff you typically post is outstanding and informative.

GSAs, OBW rolls, Seated, Walkers. Anything old and Colorado-focused, CO nationals.

Gonna get me a $50 Octagonal someday. Some. Day.

Roger beat me to the punch with this announcement.

I am one of the founders of the club and am very happy that Roger is going to speak to the club members about a very interesting but staid topic.

We'll have a couple of raffles, including a $5 U.S. Eagle, and a few club announcements, then dive into the educational portion of the program. We alternate education with auctions, so there will be no auction at the next meeting where Roger is speaking.

    Yes to refreshments.

One of us will follow-up after the meeting to see what materials from the presentation might be available.

If you are in our area, come to the meeting!

The slide set is too long to post, as is the article based on the research approach I'll describe. The Fairfax Coin Club will be able to email the presentation slides to members, and presumably others, who request them after the 13th. (See the club post, just above this one, for contact info.)

If I lived closer I'd definitely be there. Unfortunately I'm a couple hundred miles away.

I agree - but a 6 hour ride each way is a bit out of range.

    Would love to be there.

@RogerB this would have been my coin club had I stayed in my DC job! I will try to request after March 13. Thanks for the info.

I think all the officers are Generals (maybe some are full-bird Colonels?), but I don't know how many stars each has

Our club had a great meeting this past Thursday. Roger enthralled the group with a presentation on Numismatic Research. The group garnered information and skills on how to improve their knowledge in their areas of numismatic interest. One person drove 3 hours to hear Roger speak, took a lot of notes. and Roger hung around after the meeting to field participant's questions.

Once in a while Roger is not shy about sharing his views on how to properly conduct and document numismatic research, and also point out the instances where that has not happened. But what happens at the Fairfax Coin Club stays in the Fairfax Coin Club.

You can, however, get a copy of the presentation and handout by sending me a PM with your email, and I will gladly send you Roger's material.

Excellent attendance and attentive audience. Many good questions both during and after the presentation. Fun to do!

RE: "But, what happens at the Fairfax Coin Club stays in the Fairfax Coin Club."

Hmmmm....Is the next meeting in Las Vegas? :) Or, nope -- it's in Vienna (Virginia, not Austria. Kein Kaffee mit Schlagsahne :( ).

Thanks for the report, wish I could have been there.

Roger - any chance for an article on this?

RE: "...any chance for an article on this?"

I'm not sure. The subject can be very confusing - it has it's own jargon, among other things - and I'm not yet sure how to communicate it in only written form. Maybe a presentation at ANA or something similar would be more effective, and also allow for Q/A ?

The Fairfax Coin Club members had suggested this subject, so they were better motivated than than others might be.

Do you have any thoughts on how to present this in writing?

Do you have any thoughts on how to present this in writing?

I am not sure what Cambridge teaches on this, so I can't answer specifically.

Some of my ideas and questions for numismatic research:

Where can the primary source information be found in order to uncover the facts? (govt & private archives, newspapers, coins...)

What secondary sources should be included?

Bibliographies have been getting better the last few years on numismatic books and articles, but they can still be lacking or not organized in a way that is useful - for the next researcher.

Contact "Ronyahski" at the above post. he can send you a copy of the slides, etc. Then let me know what you think. All of the academic courses are lecture/hands-on and case study programs -- just with differing emphasis.
