This coin goes along nicely with other coins in my collection of lower graded busties. It has some nice color to it but has a weird “cleaned” area to it. Was this portion cleaned or is it just some heavy wear? Since I am a beginner, what is the opinion of this coin? Was it an old clean, old dip, etc? I am slowly learning the phrasing but I am very interested in how coins got the “look” that they have.

Sadly I think your coin may be environmentally damaged.

Can you expand on that for me? I understand a “dugged “ coin, but this one was cleaned wrong? I want to understand the term.

I’m sorry, I tried to get a close up of the coin to show the color, without a reflection. The holder is VF35, straight graded.

It appears to be heavily rubbed, as if it were kept in a stack of coins and handled frequently....evidently the issue is not severe enough to prevent a straight grade...though the picture accentuates the problem. Cheers, RickO

I don't see obvious signs of cleaning. Apparently PCGS did not either. What you are focused on is simply wear...those lighter areas of the coin. It is usually more evenly distributed. But unusual things can happen to coins.

I see an unattractive pattern of wear but no cleaning. It is a coin you should have avoided unless it was very cheap.

    What does the label say?

Even as a "beginner" you are recognizing unpleasantness on a coin. Why did you buy it?

Looks like a nice VF to me.
Bust halves very often have that wear pattern on the cheek.
It sounds like it fits nicely with the rest of your coins. Don't get hung up on the forums nitpickerry regarding every little blemish.
If you put together an entire set of bust halves built around the look of this coin, you will most likely have a great collection.
That's not to say that you should be unconcerned about problem coins...this coin may have great big problems we're not seeing.
Try and learn what a nice Original cbh looks like, learn which years come well struck and which tend not to...if you like the VF grade (I do !), Learn what constitutes a choice VF vs a weak one.
Look for luster! Some choice VF's rock great luster and still get dropped in grade for some other reason...these are the ones you want :)

This is why I like this forum as a beginner because I can learn from all. I am pleased with this coin. I saw a slight color/toning in the original photos and might have overlooked the wear spot, to take a chance on it. Once in hand, both were more noticeable. The color really “pops”. I couldn’t capture it with my poor phone skills but it looks very nice in hand. The reverse is more evenly toned/aged. Once again, thanks to all for chiming in. My feelings can’t be hurt.

This, plus the areas not so heavily rubbed just toned differently, that's all. Just my opinion.

Show the reverse. I'm OK with the coin, but I like seeing both sides, a strong reverse can often be a tiebreaker if the obverse is just OK (or can undo it if weak).

Some would call this a 'cameo circulated' coin. I am not a big fan of these types of coins. I am aware of the area that you are speaking of but I think that it is acceptable for a VF level coin and it wouldn't bother me (I would not consider it a problem coin). It is likely wear and not cleaning, as the color and pattern are consistent with the rest of the piece. This may have happened by the way it was stored, as well.

Natural coins are (almost) always better over Processed coins.

Reverse image may help understand how it was graded.
