St. Paul Cathedral, London - Medal

KnellKnell Posts: 453 ✭✭✭✭✭

Just wanted to share my latest acquisition. I always admire coins/medals with 3D or High Relief designs especially medals by J.Wiener and I finally bought one on eBay that I can afford.

My apology if I posted on the wrong forum/topic.

I love these too. The artist/engraver is Jacques Wiener, and all of his Cathedral medals all super cool.
You can check them all out at Ben Weiss' web site - link provided. I use his pages a lot.

If you really like these like I do you may buy another one or two of them ...

@baddogss thanks for the link. Loved those medals but they are expensive. The one that I just got is not even as good quality as those on Ben Weiss website and on your collection but I really like it and kept an eye on it on eBay until I won it. By the way did I pay too much for it at around $65? I am considering to stop buying coins for now and concentrate on J.Wiener medals or maybe split my yearly buying between coins and medals. Anyway, thanks again and thanks to other member for looking and comments.

@Knell you have to start some where. If you're happy with the medal, then you did good.
These medals have been around 150+ years and some of them have been dropped, scratched ... etc. but they are still a nice historical medal. Try to be patient and a nice one will come along.
You will pay more for the nicer ones - probably $150 - $800 depending on the subject/cathedral depicted.
Enjoy your new medal and have fun with our hobby. Bob

@baddogss thanks for you comments. I am very happy with my 1st J.Wiener medal and will sure buy more in the future. I have a question though for experts of J.Wiener medal. I noticed my St. Paul cathedral medal has French wording on it and I was comparing it with Benjamin Weiss St. Paul cathedral medal has English wording on it - is this common having different version of medals? Either way, I loved both version and will try to acquire the English version in the future. Thanks.

Interesting. I know that another one of the British cathedrals has French legends, That one is the York Cathedral, which I own a one of.

Jacques Weiner made five (5) British cathedral medals; St. Paul's, Lincoln, Westminster Abbey, Winchester Cathedral and York Cathedral,

Link to the York with French legends.

@baddogss just an fyi, just got another Wiener medal, Notre Dame of Tongres (Belgium) off eBay, may have to wait 2-4 weeks for it to arrive from London and I will post pictures once I get it. I also received an email from Mr. Mike Ross (Mr. Ben Weiss forwarded my email to him to Mr. Ross - I guessed an expert on Wiener medal) about a history of the 5 English Cathedral medal and why there is a version with French text on it.

Cool stuff, good to hear you're having fun with them. I just picked up another one too.
I'll try to remember and post a picture of it when I get it.
