News from CDN - New Monthly Greysheet to replace all wholesale coin sheets
Received this in an email this morning. The old greysheet price was almost doubled when new management took over, now it is being raised again from $161 to $249. Although, you will be receiving the Bluesheet, CAC pricing and the Goldsheet (China), so it is not simply a price increase.
I had thought about just ordering their single issue price once every month or two to stay as current as I need and it seems like this is going to do that in that the publications are all going to be in one monthly issue rather than some weekly, some monthly and others quarterly. In addition it sounds like it is going to be expanded.
I'm guessing that most dealers who use these guides will continue to do so and I probably will too. What do you think?
IMPORTANT GREYSHEET ANNOUNCEMENT
CDN Weekly, Supplement, Quarterlies, Bluesheet & Goldsheet to merge into single "Monthly Greysheet" starting May 2018
After 55 years, CDN is making a BOLD move. We're merging all our award-winning coin publications into a SINGLE "Monthly Greysheet" edition.
Everyone wins! Every month, subscribers will get:
1. All the pricing from all of our coin sheets in a single large-format tabloid
2. Added price columns in nearly EVERY series
3. Every one gets BLUESHEET pricing
4. Every one gets CAC pricing
5. Every one gets GOLDSHEET (modern China) pricing
6. Quarterly series will be updated EVERY month
7. All subscribers to the "Monthly Greysheet" will get access to wholesale pricing online and on our popular iOS & Android apps (spot-related pricing like Eagles and generic gold issues will soon be updated in REAL TIME!)
Why are we changing format? There are several important reasons for this change, including:
1. Popular demand. Readers can't keep up with all the different publications
2. Confusion. There are too many publications issued at varying times for new subscribers to understand.
3. Space. We've simply run out of space to publish all the new prices we've added in the last two years. Recently, we added Colonials and Territorial gold, but we don't have space to publish all the prices. Also, we can't fit all the grades we price.
4. Frequency. Readers want to see early and Liberty gold coins priced more often than once every three months.
How will this effect existing subscribers?
If you are a current CDN Greysheet subscriber, you will be automatically be subscribed to the new "Monthly Greysheet" with the same number of months remaining on your subscription. You will get an email soon with specific information regarding your subscription. (Note: there is no change to Greensheet publication or subscriptions.)

So, now they need to start publishing prices for the following regular date Flying Eagle and Indian cents:
1856 S3
1857 Obv. of '56
1858 LL Low Leaves
1858 SL High Leaves
1859 Shield cents
1865 Plain 5
1870 Shallow N
1871 Shallow N
1872 Shallow N
These are more important than any of the die varieties listed.
Also they need to list the 2004-D Wis. Extra leafs again.
So --- this is issued just once each month? How can it possibly be 'current?'
I used to get the all you can weekly package at shows for $13.75. Haven't bought it since. Looks like I got off the bus at the right time.
"Seu cabra da peste,
"Sou Mangueira......."
Honestly, this is great. they should have done this a long time ago
Rick,
isn't the 1856 price in the supplement actually the s-3 and the proof listed over in the quarterly the s-9? Or am I wrong assuming that
I like it except now it gives those show dealers the blue sheet pricing to try and chisel us even more. The progression the last time I sold some coins:
1- Pull out Greysheet.
2- Look at recent auction houses
3- Look at eBay
4- If they still didn't like what they saw, find something wrong with the coin.
After all that, an offer was presented.
Everyone having a Bluesheet will be bad for sellers, but my plan will be to buy anything they have then, just above Bluesheet.
After having read many of your posts and comments here, I was under the impression that you are a dealer. Not so?
Since they are re-organizing and expanding the guide, perhaps this would be a good time to suggest these changes. I would but they wouldn't know who I am, or care. But coming from you they might consider adding these changes.
I am not!
But you think like one which makes you dangerous to all concerned

Fellas, leave the tight pants to the ladies. If I can count the coins in your pockets you better use them to call a tailor. Stay thirsty my friends......
Congrats to CDN for consolidating, the wide array of previous offerings was indeed confusing.
As for lowballing, etc., price guides are simply another source for a buyer or seller to use when agreeing to terms. Don't blame the price guide if the real issue is the buyer or seller's lack of negotiating skill.
Just saving a bit of change! The price is still ridiculous IMHO!
Bad part to me is, now I am stuck paying for the stuff that I have no need for. Mainly the gold(china) sheet and to a lesser extent the blue sheet.
??? So what happens to those who are currently subscribed to the MOP? (Once a month, a Weekly, Monthly, and current Quarterly is received). Do they get the new version each month?
I'll still buy one periodically, carry it around with me at the coin shows and apparently disrespect the ancient old time dealers for having the nerve to pull it out in their presence. lol
The whole worlds off its rocker, buy Gold™.
BOOMIN!™
I try not to get too negative on dealers and the such....
Congrats to the CDN for trying to put the pricing knowledge power BACK into the hands of the dealers and screwing over the collectors!
When I started collecting again, just prior to joining these forums, I knew NOTHING about pricing (except ebay).
I came here, I learned a lot. I learned about the greysheet.
I would hear complaints from dealers about collectors getting the greysheet and "expecting to buy at greysheet levels....like the dealers!". Still hear those complaints around here.
I used to buy the greysheets every month or so, for the series I was interested in.
I have NOT purchased a single copy since it was purchased and changed. As a collector, and sometime purchaser of coins, a single monthly purchase, just to check out a single coin or two, may not make sense as you would likely want to add that cost to your coin cost and it isn't cheap any longer.
So, it appears that the CDN wants to again put the most information into the hands of dealers at the cost, literally and figuratively, of the casual collector.
Yes, one CAN purchase it. Yes, one DOES have other avenues to get information (ebay, HA archives, etc....but if you don't have access when you need it, it isn't like you can just have the printed sheets like you can with the greysheet).
Very disappointing and very much anti-collector feeling.
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
As a dealer, I don't care what a potential buyer carries around and looks at. It makes no difference to me.
It's still either pass or play......and a good buyer who knows their coins doesn't really need to carry anything , IMO.
I enjoy the freedom of walking shows without any sheets, binders, etc.
If the major wholesalers know you and know what you buy, they usually find you anyway.
Try going to a show without any price guides.
It's a great feeling.
I've had people come to my tables with blue sheets, grey sheets, red books, red books from 40 years ago, ebay listings and phone lists with prices. I don't care what they use. I have my stuff priced and I know what I need for it. So if one works great if not that's ok too.
HAPPY COLLECTING
Looks like a big cost cut move by CDN....If you don't fall for dealer's 1st offer off Greysheet ..they will check auction prices ,ebay ..... Greysheet weekly... except for moderns prices didn't much week to week
Wabbit.. spot on..... my own experience too
Only matter of time before Greysheet is an internet issue
I have the greysheet package for like $13 a month. If this new setup is more than that, then I am out. There is plenty of free pricing info out there to estimate the values that are in greysheet.
I understand why you don't want to pay a lot of money for something that you don't really need. I don't get the anger and resentment.

What do you use when you buy coins?
I don’t rely solely on the Greysheet for prices buying or selling (I do use it ) but I think there is more to the story than you think.
CDN has been working on free collector price guides for about a year. I believe it is in the Numismatist. There are differences in dealer wholesale prices, eBay auction results CoinFacts Pricing and pcgs/ngc price guides. Because CDN wants to have a wholesale and a retail trends guide doesn’t make them horrible people. Whether either is actually relevant will be determined in the future.

We're talking about a publication literally titled "Coin Dealer Newsletter" right?
My dealings with people are driven by an "ask" and "bid". Fair is fair. It is a great spread to work with, for anyone seriously in the hobby and field. And it's an even better negotiating tool than a smart phone or ebay/HA, etc.
For the most part, it simplifies my work in the shop. Even quicker, for those who know coins and grades.
My own interpreting from this is greysheet finally acknowledging that "rare" coins are NOT similar to the stock market and each coin that sells needs to be viewed individually and not 1 coin=the whole market.
By only publishing once a month they can look at an individual coin/grade and better determine whether an auction result was because the market has actually dropped or it just it fell through the cracks.
This would be a start in the right direction in my opinion.
Wow.
Great catch!
Ummm...yeah, and I know/knew that. I also know that times evolved so advanced collectors, and even some not as advanced, would purchase it as a reference point. Names mean nothing at some point. Content and intent mean more than names.
It's all good. It's a business decision they have made and obviously some of you buy into it. You are either fine with the pricing or you don't use it and you don't care about those that have in the past when it was more affordable and useable.
All good. Carry on and ignore.
I've been told I tolerate fools poorly...that may explain things if I have a problem with you. Current ebay items - Nothing at the moment
this rag is called the coin dealer newsletter-not the collector price guide. they are making things more confusing and less accurate.
the best pricing sources are ones where you can see all auction results-at least that way you have a chance of figuring out if a coin was high end or not and figure things accordingly.
