Possible new discovery m/m error coin? Advice needed. Opinions anyone?

1981 Half dollar “P” m/m error blob coin found. Similar to 81 “S” m/m type 1 error. I have come up empty on my search for any similar style error coin’s. Anyone ever seen one? Opinions, advice appreciated.

Try cropping your photos and reducing the resolution to about 2000 pixels wide. Slow image opening works against members responding. :)

There are many reasons that your "blob" has poked its head up on your Kennedy half...wait for the experts because I'm not one of them.

It's just wear caused by normal circulation. There is nothing in the way of an "error" there.

Metal moved by contact with other coins.

The example you show on the left is a coin that is much closer to being uncirculated than the other. The one on the right, which is the one that you are asking about has been fairly heavily used and that is why the mint mark looks the way that it does.

P was banged up in circulation, much like the rest of the coin. Nothing special to see here, and even if there were, whoever would examine it for purposes of decreeing it a new mint mark variety would insist on seeing a high grade one to make that determination.

When did they start putting the MM on the hub? When they added them to the individual dies there was always lots of variation. Plus, die wear can add various stages of the details.

That MM has been damaged through handling/circulation.....not as minted. Cheers, RickO

I want to say 1989, but even if it was, it may not have been for all denominations right away.

  • Thanks for all the info.

    Technical term: Damage. Circulation wear
