quote - "Although we will describe the discovery and the subsequent investigation in the March 2017 issue of the Gobrecht Journal, we did not want to wait until then to publicize this new counterfeit."
enjoy.
i did some basic searching and didn't see a thread here. correct me if i'm mistaken.

finally decided to see if i could find one, and did. i'm sure others have seen it too.

So are they saying that these are 1875's altered to 1872's?? If so, it sure is a good job on making the 5 a 2.
the coin is a counterfeit, not altered. the big die chip in the ribbon on the rev is a major diagnostic and the lynchpin, the wrong reverse mm position/size. similar to how the wrong CC for certain morgan counterfeits etc. is used.
i've never held one nor studied so i'm going by what they are reporting and sharing.![:) :)](https://forums.collectors.com/resources/emoji/smile.png)
it is a fairly recent publicly-released study, dec 2016. so less than 18 months, which in itself says a lot.
