This is true, but try VAM 23. One of the most useful diagnostics for 1878-S is the bottom of the eagle's right wing (viewer's left) where it meets the leg. This area was re-engraved at the mint more often than not.
I think messydesk is right -- VAM-23.
Save the picture, and then using a photo display app increase the size, and then look for diagnostics for VAM-23 -- they are visible.

Is it also a RPM or is that part of VAM-23? The 1 in the date looks repunched.
