The dealers should be the ones wanting the fee charged. If some dude struggles to come up with the 5 bucks, they sure don't want him parking at their table to just LOOK at coins all day.

  • Come on guys, if $5 is really going to break the bank? We go to these shows to help keep the hobby alive and help educate the young ones coming into it.

a entrance fee isn't the norm in my neck of the woods but I wouldn't object to paying a modest fee ($5.00 or less) to attend a "better" show. However I think it's really dumb for the ANA to charge a fee to attend their show. Cut this quote from a link to their web-site.....

"The American Numismatic Association is a nonprofit educational organization dedicated to educating and encouraging people to study and collect coins and related items. The ANA serves the academic community, collectors and the general public with an interest in numismatics."

Couldn't they encourage people and serve collectors and the general public better by teasing them with free admission when their show comes to town? Heaven knows they charge the dealers enough for their tables and charge hefty fees for those that want to attend the educational seminars. They might actually perk the interest of a few new collectors with free admission.

    @BAJJERFAN

I remember being the morning rush at the National Money show last time it was in Portland. Long before the end it had turned to tumbleweeds. That was the least busy show I've ever been to. It was sort of fun to hang out and get to know a few dealers. I certainly wasn't interrupting anything important.

Could this attitude of Free Show's or nothing be the problem with Numismatics now.
    Too many cheap people complaining?

Gun Show's charge lots for entrance.
Watch show's charge tons for entrance.
And don't get me started on a Comic Show price!!

BTW when you get tables at those types of shows they are cheaper then most coin show tables too.

And those all have more attendance then then Numismatics.
How about charge and use that money for advertising this shows?

Just so you know - I tried to squash your avatar. Twice.

I have no problem with an entry fee to get into the show. I've helped put on my scale model clubs show for years and I know what goes on behind the scenes and how much it costs to pay for the room rental, etc. What really gets me though is paying to park. That sets me off big time. There is absolutely no valid reason to do that and I am not likely to go anywhere that does that.

Y’all are complaining about a $5 entry fee but are willing to spend $50, $500, $5000 or more on a single coin?
    Quit being rediculois.
Browsing a coin show can be considered entertainment, just like a sporting event, which costs money to get into.

I get a kick out of people that book a flight/hotel/car to go to a coin show to scout out some gold double eagles but balk at the $5 entrance fee. I don't mind paying a nominal fee to get it and like some posters already mentioned, there are ways to get in free at some shows if you have a particular membership.

If you want to see really crappy nickel and diming (really tenning and twentying), check out the hotels on the Vegas Strip! Inexplicable resort fees that keep rising, pay to park now in many a casino, and lights on the machines that declare if you are worthy of a "free" drink or not.

Our annual convention is coming up near Seattle. The admission is $2.00 per day, $5.00 for all three days. Children 12 and under are free. The idea was that a small fee and registration would discourage petty thieves. There's free parking on the site. http://pnna.org/convention/convention.html
But collectors are an interesting bunch. We have cards to pass out at coin clubs, etc. that are good for free admission to the show. We'll see if that increases attendance totals.

Non issue for me. I enjoy attending shows. Any cost is offset by what is observed which adds to my point of personal reference

Experience the World through Numismatics...it's more than you can imagine.

I always find it amusing how coin people yell basically bloody murder if shows aren't free to attend when the major jewelry shows charge $300 to walk in the door which only allows for buying privileges and a separate $350 charge if you want to sell anything.
