I have always preferred rack boxes when looking for PSA 10 candidates. No wax stains, gum residue or tightly wrapped corners gives the best chance for contenders...and this box did not disappoint! Here were the stars and rookies that didn’t make the grade...
I found this fun rack and set it aside. Wish the Ripken wasn’t upside down, but it is a sure fire MINT 9 with a shot at a 10.
There were 19 contenders for PSA 10 in the bottom half of the box. Here are the first 18...
This is such a classic design from the 1980s and looks like the square-cousin of the 1983 Topps. As if Topps knew the 1983 design was so good that they just didn’t want to let it go. Here were the stars and rookies that didn’t make the grade...
No Strawberry’s, but pulled this sweet looking Donnie Baseball. Darn you centering gods!
I bought a whole case of 88 Donruss back in the day. I liked them then and still do. Now I have to go into the dark corners of the garage among'st the other cases of cards to see what I have left.

Welcome to the boards! Glad your first post was this thread. I’m with you, 1988 Donruss will always hold a place in my heart and I still get a thrill every time I pull a Grace or Jefferies RC.
Cracked a lot of these with my son and his friends at our house. Lots of memories from 87 to 93 when it came to a halt.
Opened Donruss/Score/Bowman/Upper Deck ETC. Lots of fun.
Condition wise, that was one heck of a box! The cards were coming out razor sharp, with clean registration and great centering. I love finding boxes like this along the way. They make the rips so much fun. First, here were the stars and rookies that didn’t make the grade...
I found an insane 50 contenders in this box for PSA 10. Here are the first 47 of them...
I was really pumped about this Ripken and Ryan. They are sick in person...crazy clean. I might have leaned in a little on the Reggie, since the T/B centering is closer to 55/45, but I liked the ring of 50 contenders. I will likely throw Mr. Jackson back in the non-grade pile tomorrow...
No Mattingly RC in this box, but I will sub this Strawberry RC. It is a MINT 9 given the T/B centering is off, but a total blazer in every other aspect. Plus I loved this card as a kid!!
Anyone want to take a stab at guessing on what date this thread will hit 50,000 views? 100,000? This has to be the most prolific thread in the history of the forum, especially since it's still ongoing with what seems to be an endless supply of source material. 80s collecting was the sweet spot for me, so it's been entertaining to follow, for sure.
In 1984, I couldn't find Donruss anywhere, and was bummed that Topps essentially recycled the 83 design, so I was almost exclusively an 84 Fleer collector that year. Outside of maybe the 87 design with the blue borders and 3-D action, 84 was arguably the best Fleer design of the 80s. Simple and clean. That was a great 84 Fleer box that you just ripped!
Great thread! I've just started opening some 80's boxes and it's a blast. Opened an 86 D (Jose razor edges but o/c), and 84 T vending (Mattingly o/c, Ryan very nice, no Straw), going to open a 2nd 84 vending tonight. Strawberry or bust!
Dug out one opened box of 88 D, just as we left it in 1988. Only 6 cards were 100% centered out of 540. Garber Marshall, Smiley,Bass, D. Martinez and Dan Pasqua. 32 others were close but no cigar. Amazing how when we opened these we did not really look at centering, now it sticks out like a sore thumb.

Wow! Is that the highest % of potential 10's yielded since you started this?
Yeah Tom...this and the first 1984 Donruss box I ripped had the highest percentage of contenders so far.

Thanks Jason and glad your first post was in response to this thread! Ripping 1980s wax hunting for the cards we dreamed of buying with our allowance back then will get any nostalgic heart pumping again. Here is hoping you land that perfect Strawberry
I like the quality of the cardboard and I think it's amenable to good clean cuts - so not surprised in your outcome.
Very nice - that puts a nice dent in the set in 10.
I hope I'm around when you sub these gems Chris.
Thanks Mike. You’re still a young guy, so I’m sure you will get to see lots of these subbed 😎

I know, right? Until you go back and look, you don’t realize that straight from a 1980’s pack usually means an 8 best case due to centering , print dots or edge chipping. Crazy how we all overlooked that as young collectors. Those were the pre-grading days!
I take them with my iPad. I don’t have a scanner and my iPad is easier for taking the pic and posting to the thread. Hopefully the pics have been showing okay.

Found three boxes of 24 1987 Topps Rack-Packs. First lid flipped to take a peek was Mike Schmidt All Star. I must have sold the rest back in the days of card shows.
That was too much time between breaks. Let’s get back to ripping...up next are 2 sets of 1987 Donruss “The Rookies.” These are really tough condition-wise, since the cello is wrapped tightly around the 56-card set. Here is hoping for a perfect Maddux, McGwire, Bo or Palmeiro. It doesn’t help that McGwire is the top card and Bo is the bottom card either...
I ripped so many of these packs as a kid hunting for Sheffields, Alomars and of course, Griffeys. Tom Gordon was bigger than Randy Johnson at the time. Sabo was also a big card.
Conundrum - Loving my unopened baseball card collection....but really like ripping too

Nice 86s. For the life of me, I can't pull a centered Ryno. I've opened at least 30 rack boxes over the last few years.
Thanks,

1985 Topps Football (starting in psa 8) - #9 - started 05/21/06
Well Chris.
I've opened my share of 86T and not seen Cal look any better.
PSA 11 on sub. My prediction.
I've always dreamed of opening a pack and finding a perfect Ryan. Never happened.
The Mattingly and Ripken are stunners! Looks like you hit a great box. Hope it carries through the entire case.
John
Thanks David!
Thanks Mike...not sure they will give an 11, but I wouldn’t complain with a 10+ 😎
Thanks John. I am hoping to find another Sandberg that clean, but without the print dot next time 👍
Time to finish out the second half of that 1986 Topps rack box that produced the gorgeous Mattingly and Ripken cards...

What a box! I've gone through 10 vending boxes without finding as many dime candidates as you did in half a rack box.
The Puckett looks perfect!
Woah! The 86s are super tough, so to find that many is outstanding! Blazer of a Kirby!
Holy smokes! Great box!
Nice pulls!

Thanks guys! Every now and again you get blessed with a top condition rip...was glad it was the challenging 1986 Topps set.
Alright...how about some 1984 Topps? Here goes a case fresh vending box...
You are keeping me in suspense. Well, not as much as an 89 fleer or Donruss.

I don't know man, that Puckett looks 50.0000001 / 49.9999999 top and bottom to me.

That 1986T Charlie Hustle got me thinking if we will ever see another player/manager again.
Per Mike’s request, up next is a box of 1984 Fleer 😉
I seriously doubt it. That’s a bygone time.

I “bet” not 🙂
The 84F have a tendency to turn yellow. I can not tell from the pictures. Were these lily-white?
Yes, bright white. Any yellow tint is from the light bulb above when I snapped the pics, since it is nighttime by the time I finished ripping.

Ahh yesss.. the nostalgic pleasure of reflecting back to those mid to late eighties -- when the American card show scene was a flourishing juggernaut.
Topps stained their product (bubble gum sticks), Donruss went with the cheap material stock, and Fleer often misjudged their cutting dimension.
*Then Upper Deck stepped in... POW!
Grand times indeed..
Time for another 12 racks from the 1988 Donruss case I busted a few weeks ago...
This set is so tough condition wise! Still a fun rip though. Here were the stars and rookies that didn’t make the cut...
Managed to pull these rookies...
Set these packs aside since they had dual stars on top...
However, only found one contender...
Another Zonk PSA 10 candidate! I believe the last one was an '88 Topps.
Hey Chris...
Are you taking these with your cell phone?
I take them with my iPad. I don’t have a scanner and my iPad is easier for taking the pic and posting to the thread. Hopefully the pics have been showing okay.
Better than my scanner.

Good luck with the 1987 Donruss the rookie's set. I have always like the look of that set.
So many early cards of the top RCs back then! Here were the ones that did not make the grade...
And then I found these 3 contenders for GEM MINT. Wow...I am loving this Big Mac 😉
Happy Friday!
Time to hunt for some Griffey RCs...
I ripped so many of these packs as a kid hunting for Sheffields, Alomars and of course, Griffeys. Tom Gordon was bigger than Randy Johnson at the time. Sabo was also a big card.
Git ya a Griff!
