Cracking out a rattler for minimal gains must be bad Karma...

Came back AT - I guess that’s what I get for destroying history for a perceived small ROI
Things I like to do: Collect PL Morgans. That’s is all.

Not sure why they would say at for that one. The reverse looks very nice but obverse isn't super attractive.
Maybe try to conserve and resubmit.
We're talking an 81S. Would have to be super clean.
The coins worth resubmitting should probably still be sent in under "regrade" or "reconsideration". Unfortunately I have been stung by a number of "original" old holder coins that cac will not sticker then delivers the bad news why. Old holder is maybe a lock downgrade in many cases.
many OGH are spot on for current grading standards only a small amount will up grade some do downgrade reading of other collectors experiences. I would rather have the old holder and the 40 bucks grading fee rather then a new mundane holder even if the coin would of garnered a MS64+ or MS65. The coin is question is far more desirable in the OGH. The coin was in a slab a long time and the spots on the face could be old dip residue that was not apparent when it was at first encapsulated.
Welcome to the club that no one ever wants to be a member of! I have several "way worse" stories then the above!
I am no expert but it seems that cracking old holders can be a dangerous game.
That slab would presumably haven an easy sale. You could have taken that money and the new grading fee and bought something nice. But of course that is all 20/20 hindsight.
Yeah yeah I messed up... I beat myself up plenty already lol
Thanks for posting....good education for new folks. You could always submit ATS if you were so inclined and it might grade. But it is an 81-S in MS64 so the only premium now would be the color.

How could there be a premium once the cost of submitting it twice was deducted?
I don't think I would call it AT. Not attractive to me personally, but not AT either.
Great transactions with oih82w8, JasonGaming, Moose1913.
I am always amazed at the dollar heights folks will go to in order to acquire a very common coin in a mid grade with 'color'. It is just a mystery to me..especially when a coin (not the op's) is obviously AT'ed in the slab. But pay they do...
Not sure how much the OP has in the coin already and true, another 20 bucks would put you farther in the hole but if marketed right and an aggressive buyer comes along Could be cash flow positive.
'An outstanding type coin previously in a PCGS old green holder. The luscious sea greens of the obverse are only enhanced by a gorgeous hint of orange gold between the 6 and 8 o'clock positions while the superbly struck reverse displays the detail and beautiful luster that the coin possessed the day it was coined at the Mint 137 years ago. A small bit of additional color on the lower rim of the reverse only serves to enhance the beauty and desirability of this treasured American icon.'
Feel free to use the above in any of your promotions!

do not feel too bad....we have all paid for our education in the coin world.....bet that coin would look good in a Dansco Album
The burner on that stove is hot stop putting your hand on it over and over .
Well, at least it's a common date. And it's ugly, too. And you can wash the ugly off. Maybe crack it out, dip it, resubmit it and even go up a grade.

I am waiting for a blast white coin to come back Questionable Color. They are so used to pushing that button lately!
I like horror stories, care to share?
I'll start a thread some day. The scars are still too fresh.
I would never have cracked that one.
If in doubt, don't crack it out.
There are way to many things being cracked now a day's IMO.
It is a 65, I just guessed wrong on the toning that turned out to be AT
What were you thinking? Should have left that one alone. I guess it was a cheap lesson, as it could have been much worse.
Sometimes, it’s better to be LUCKY than good. 🍀 🍺👍

Coins in those old rattlers usually sell for a nice premium. I prefer buying those because I prefer undipped coins. They've been in the slab for a number of years so if they were dipped you can see how they are going to tone.
My viewpoint is if a coin has been dipped and is in a new holder, you never can tell how it's going to tone until years later, and the coin could get ugly if it was dipped improperly.
Your coin on the PCGS website was described as Genuine UNC Details (91 - Questionable Color) - which I guess occurred because of being improperly dipped. If it gets dipped again, I'm not sure if the former dip chemical has a sort of corrosive effect or not? Which might be noticed on a newly dipped coin?
I can't wait to get my OGH's. Got all of the ones I wanted at 20-25% pcgs value page, so there's gotta be money in there somewhere. The 62-64s look like they should be higher grades. There's one 65 I'm gonna crack for 66, which I think it should've gotten in the first place.
since the toning is not attractive, i would also vote to dip it to blast white, then resubmit.

Or down. Sometimes the toning is hiding a few distracting marks....
It's simply not worth it for a common date coin, unless you think you can magically dip it to a 66
waste of time, money, and dip.
Where can such a magic dip be acquired? And is there a premium magic dip available that can take any coin to a 70? Then i could quit my day job.
That is an ugly coin... and I see some marks underneath the residue/tarnish.....If you dip it, those marks, and possibly some surface etching, will become very visible. Good luck, Cheers, RickO
basically in its original slab its value was at its apex. From there money was spent (stockholders appreciate it I'm sure ) and that perceived value was destroyed , now if you dip it it will be a $40 coin raw.
Maybe its a good idea to resubmit the coin , ok write that down on a post it note stick it to the slab and put it away for 5 years , then think about it again. On an item that's 120 years old what exactly is the rush?
Probably about $100 for the lesson. Well at least our host gave you a pretty picture to remind you what not to do.
