Overkill on shipping gold coins?

logger7logger7 Posts: 9,031 ✭✭✭✭✭

I recently got a certified gold coin delivered, mid-$2000s in a registered package, with a note on the front "postal inspectors can track enclosed via its unremoveable microchip; 13 anti-theft features are used". Then the invoice said that the package sealing had been videod. Is the risk so great now? I don't think I have done a registered since the late 90s or received on for over a dozen years.

Are you worried about being tracked by the Postal Inspectors via unremovable microchip now?

Maybe the note on the front is like the stickers on home windows saying this home is protected by XXXX. Maybe you should call the company you got it from and tell them you would like to disable the microchip on your gold coin, and ask for directions?

If I was a dirty thief I'd snag that package before anything.

This is the age of the fraudster. Don't be surprised by increased security features.

I'm still looking for the chip, now if I might need some lead foil to hide it from tracking lol.

Tracking and identification features should be welcomed by those who ship valuable items....Cheers, RickO

I had a stamp made up that says "Danger Live virus" , ( it may or may not have a skull and crossbones on it) so far haven't had problems of any packages being opened since I started using it.

This sounds more like a step to thwart scammer buyers who claim that they received an empty package.

USPS Registered Mail is highly tracked / secured in the USPS system already. The added microchip and anti-theft measures are all add-ons that have nothing to do with the USPS, and most likely just words to try and add extra protection for the seller. If an attempted thief/scammer receives a package with that wording, they might think twice before claiming they received an empty package.

A package like that says "steal me" all over it.

I buy my insurance from USAA, In the late 1980s they sent me alarm stickers to put on my car windows even though I didn't have an alarm, the letter they sent said the stickers were almost as effective as having an alarm, because the criminals will look for an easier target. I assume the message on the box is based on the same idea. Pretty smart.

It sure seemed like paranoia to me given the fact it was an ebay transaction and I'm more a seller than a buyer. I can't recall the last time I got a registered, maybe early 2000s and have done a lot of buying and selling.
