Crossing results

Hi Folks,
Okay, so at FUN I submitted 7 NGC holdered coins for crossing. I just got the results today - 20 day turnaround which is faster than the current 25 day estimate. I should point out that 5 of the 7 had green beans on them. I probably did not need to cross them but I am slowly turning all of my US collection into a single brand of holder, just for continuity. I like the style of the PCGS holder better for photography - the grey prongs blend in better than the white ones, and the PCGS slabs can be polished up so that one can actually image the coin and not the nicks on the slab.

I felt that the 5 CAC stickered coins were graded correctly and the 2 that were not were a point too high. So when I filled out the submission form, I put in minimum crossover grades of straight cross for the CAC stickered coins and one point less for the non-CAC stickered coins. 6 of 7 crossed at these grades:

1841-O H10C MS62 (N62+ CAC)
1844 H10C RPD FS-301 (FS-000.063) MS64 (N65)
1829 10C Small 10C MS61 (N62+)
1832 10C AU50 (N50 CAC)
1818/7 50C Large 8 XF40 (N40 CAC)
1841-O 50C DNC (N55 CAC)
1859-O 50C AU58 (N58 CAC)

In addition, I wanted to get the variety designation on the 44 half dime. I had got it for 64 money so adding the variety kept its value. Of note, the 41-0 half was the least 'original' of the group. I suspect that it is possible that one direction the PCGS graders are going is to penalize messed with coins. FWIW - I also suspect that this one may not get the green bean if it were to go to CAC today rather than around 5 years ago - I think they are tightening up as well on even mildly cleaned coins. Off to CAC next, I have full images of each in their NGC slabs of the beaned ones (below) for hopefully, rebeaning at CAC for the 4 ex-beaned ones.

Here are some images of the beaned ones in their old slabs:

Here is the 44 hd in its old slab - it lacked the booming luster of a 65 and correct now in the 64:

Here is an image of the 29 dime - you can clearly see the hairlines on the obverse, clearly overgraded at 62+:

I will take a bath on the the 29 dime if I ever choose to sell, but I think it was one of the very few overgraded coins I bought at strong money. C'est la vie..... And I think I still come out ahead with the 6 crosses overall given the perception of higher value for PCGS holdered coins.

Best, SH

All exceptionally nice coins! I really like all three halves. Do you have any idea why the 41-O didn't cross?

MM - good question. I suspect the combination of hairlines in the fields and I think the reverse may show more wear than 55 - so PCGS probably felt it was a 53. That is my guess.... You can click on the images and supersize them - anyone please let me know what you think.

Nice coins, sorry you got a couple downgrades. You may get upgrades with reconsideration, who knows. Maybe NGC gives bumps for toning, etc.. With images and original certs. you may be able to get the higher grade coins back into their old holders if it would help get more $.

Are the perceived changes in grading actually reflections of a declining market that is getting more and more selective?
Maybe this is what "market grading" really means.

Good crossover results... always surprising when a CAC coin does not cross....However, we are dealing with human opinions here, so exceptions will occur.... Cheers, RickO

Nice results. and some very nice-looking coins... looks like you were pretty confident in what you were going to get, and then PCGS validated that for you. Congrats!

Agree, grading is subjective, crossing always results in a harder look than raw IMO, so hard to get upgrades for recently graded coins IMO, unless it is obviously undergraded. Like I said, they graded as I expected with the exception of one not crossing.

Thanks. Of course it would have been nice to have been wrong and got an upgrade or two.....

Beautiful coins - thanks for going to the trouble to make a truly educational post.
