Need help identifying a Half Dollar 1988

Hello, everyone. I am new in in coin collecting and certainly new in this forum. My apologies in advance for any inadvertent mistakes on my part.

I chanced upon a half dollar in my collection with certain unusual distinguishing marks and I'm not sure if these are normal or something worth pursuing. Pictures are worth as thousand words so I am posting them here.

What appears to be a white discoloration is interesting. Not sure also if there is double stamping. The reverse of the coin showing the tail of the eagle has a mark that looks like the number six.

Please let me know what you think. Any opinions or suggestions will be appreciated. Thanks.

Normal 1988-D Kennedy $1/2 in abnormally bad condition. The cloudiness is just milky toning. I don't see any doubling, maybe some strike doubling but that isn't unusual or uncommon.

If I'm looking at the same mark that you are, that's not a "6", it's "F. G." for Frank Gasparro the engraver.

Sorry to say, it's worth 50 cents. But if you find it interesting, keep it in the collection.

  • The number "6" is on the first feather of the tail, below the FG stamp. Sorry, I don't have a macro lens so I used my phone and a lens to magnify the image.

I don't see anything but normal contact marks. Might look like a "6".

Nothing there. Just an ugly half dollar. Value is 50 cents.

That might be an Omega mark. It's upside down, but you never know... ;)

The outer clading is comprised of Cupronickel 75% copper, 25% nickel and a trace amount of manganese. Now, I don't know if what you see are improper bonding of those metals or impurities but the right angle discoloration may indicate something from the outside perhaps influenced the discoloration.

@Aromem.... Welcome aboard.... Your Kennedy Half is a circulation piece that has encountered some staining....no die doubling and the '6' is nothing but metal artifact.... That being said, feel free to ask you questions.. we were all new to the hobby at one point and this forum has incredible experts that help us all from time to time. Cheers, RickO

Looks to me like a normal half that had scotch tape on it for some time.
