Question: is there a tool I can buy to attach to my laptop that can project a magnified coin image on my computer screen?

Yes, probably the cheapest is a USB Microscope, which you can get on ebay for $20-40.

Some Canon and Nikon cameras have software which can do this; you will get a higher quality image that way.
