A different kind of Daniel Carr collectable

Back in 2007 or so Daniel Carr was having some fun with his edge lettering machine and he created some edge-lettered Sacagewea dollar coins. I believe his first project was the phrase "DARWIN RULES" and he also did another text. He sold examples of these on eBay.
He also put out the word that he would do custom edge-lettering. I had him do some for me.
My custom edge-lettering read "KILROY WAS HERE", which was a popular WWII graffiti slogan plastered by GIs wherever they went. It was often accompanied by a cartoon sketch of a man with a big nose peering over a wall. I had DC do twenty 1942 nickels, twenty circulated Sacagewea dollars, and twenty uncirculated Sacs.
This is not your normal Daniel Carr material but I thought I'd share it.

Nothing on them to indicate that I lettered them (but I did).
I also edge-lettered some Sacagawea dollars and spent them. At the time, the President dollars had "E PLURIBUS UNUM" edge lettering, but the early Sacagawea dollars did not have any edge lettering. I didn't want to put "E PLURIBUS UNUM" on the Sacagaweas, but I wanted something close that I could practice the edge lettering with, and something that would be unlikely to ever be noticed by anybody, but if anybody ever did, they would be wondering WTH !!?
So the few Sacagawea dollars that I spent were edge-marked "EAT SPURIOUS TUNA".
I never heard of anyone finding one - most people don't look at their pocket change very closely.
People buy coins of the year of there birth it would be cool to have there name on edge also
Oh great. Dan Easter egged SAC dollars. Now we all have to start roll searching freaking SAC dollars?!?!?!
I love it!
I added my tiny JBK initials stamp to these coins (on the reverse, not visible in these pictures), so the provenance is secure.
Great thread @JBK!
Here's Dan's thread from 2007. There is also "In Gold We Lust" (In God We Trust).

@Zoins Thx a million for posting that. I knew there was another slogan and it was driving me crazy trying to recall the "In Gold We Lust" dollar.
I had forgotten the "Eat Spurious Tuna" one, but I am pretty sure DC sold a few of those as well as the "Gold" one, so I have examples of those somewhere.
Thx for posting these details. The more places this information gets posted the more known these fun collectables will become, and the knowledge will be recorded for posterity.
I will bet that anyone roll searching dollar coins for these has a much higher chance of finding a real edge lettering error than a Carr piece, but somewhere, someday, someone will find one (If they haven't already).
"Eat Spurious Tuna"...who couldn't like that? Classic.
Even I forgot about some of those.
Great thread.
Wow... what a great find that would be....looks like I need to get a few rolls of Sac's at the bank.... Would love to find a dcarr special... Cheers, RickO
@JBK thank you!

Great idea !!!
I'm not sure I understand the desirability of altered common date coinage, but whatever makes you happy. At least these are legal to make.
Reminds me of "Boggs." Hope you letter some more stuff and spend them. Sooner or later one will get publicity and then the knock on the door... So perhaps you should not.
PS You have a money making machine my friend. So how much are you charging to edge letter each Sac we send? What about putting "silver" on each war nickel in the set?
How is this a "money making machine?" Someone else will just copy it verbatim if there is any premium, and the pieces will be indistinguishable leading to a collapse in premium.
This does not even deserve an answer. But I like you
Mr. Carr has a mint. Mr. Carr is an "artist." Mr. Carr has a huge following. There is a track record for Mr. Carr's past issues - probably virtually all of them sold out. Therefore, based on his track record, IMHO just about anything Mr. Carr produces will be sold out. That means ANYTHING! For example Mr. Carr could take a 2018 Lincoln cent and counter mark the coin with a tiny 1/4 moon and it would sell for at least $5 and I'd be in the line to get one. That's what I call a "money making machine."
He could probably offer to personally sign the little paper insert that comes with his issues and add an extra dollar for the autograph. That's what I call a "money making machine." Cha-ching. Even the errors made on purpose could sell for triple the going rate of a normal issue. Heck, throw some scrap and floor dust between the dies and planchet and call the pieces "End of Day Issues." I'm still in. How about stamping junk silver quarters and half dollars with a Moonlight Mint hallmark. Thankfully Mr. Carr is not as greedy as I would be if I had a Mint of my own.
I'm done.
PS AFAIK, Some of Mr. Carr's stuff has already been counterfeited. That proves he has a good product in high demand.
To quote Carr and his supporters, "how do you counterfeit something that doesn't exist?"
Let's call it for what it is. You cannot counterfeit a counterfeit. Sorry. The case law is clear that an imitation need not be exact (including date manipulations) to run afoul of the HPA or counterfeiting statutes.
Edited: To clarify, my comments are not targeted as to the edge lettering pieces. I'm responding to Insider more generally as to other pieces by the same manufacturer. I'm sorry for the non sequitur on other Carr products.
Just promise me you will not stamp "CHEERIOS" on any dollars!!!

OK, I'll play the silly game but first, to make sure we know what you are writing about PLEASE POST YOUR DEFINITION OF A COUNTERFEIT COIN.
Thanks in advance.
We should do this by PM. It was not my intent to derail a valid Carr thread.
Let's not have this discussion all over again. This thread is about the counterstamped edges. Period.
TD
Actually, it has evolved way past that. I stated that Mr. Carr is a "money making machine" and that has been disputed. My opinion includes anything he chooses to "letter."
I asked for a member to post their definition of a counterfeit coin. I'll bet some members don't know what a counterfeit is. I need to confirm the definition also. I have found that when folks start a discussion about anything, it is best to start on the same page. Often there is no point in discussion when they both can agree in-+ the first place.
This is from the web page on:

Coin not genuine, but resembling or apparently intended to resemble or pass for genuine coin, including genuine coin prepared or altered so as to resemble or pass for coin of a higher denomination. U. S. v. Hopkins (D. C.) 2G Fed. 443; U. S. v. Bogart. 24 Fed. Cas. 1185
Is the nickel a Dan Carr piece?
Yes, DC edge lettering. Used on Sac dollars but I had arranged to have a few nickels done also.
It is a normal nickel, with added edge lettering. I got this in a cool group from JBK, with a counterstamped dollar, 2 o/s coppers, and 2 counterstamped nickels

At the time I had done those, I had just acquired my edge lettering machinery.
So this gave me a way to test it out and learn how best to utilize it.
I recently got this one on ebay.
Will ANACS slab it?
Pacific Northwest Numismatic Association
Yes, of course it'll slab. It's a U.S. coin.
Maybe details because of the edge "graffiti". Or maybe straight-grade with a "Countermark" (or similar) notation.
But unless it's listed in the Moonlight Mint catalog, I doubt it'll get a Dan Carr label.
