'New' New Jersey Copper to Share

I just got this 1787 New Jersey Copper today from Shawn Yancey. It a Maris 63-q...which is relatively common. It's certainly not super high grade and isn't perfect by any stretch, but I think the coin is fairly nicely centered and has really nice surfaces and color (which is definitely not always the case with colonials). Oddly enough, I wasn't able to add this to my colonial type set in the 'New Jersey Head Right' slot...which was strange (sent a request to have it added - we'll see what I hear).

The 'q' reverse eventually develops a cud type of break that develops and encompasses the upper left portion of the shield...a neat 'Broken Shield' die state. If you look really closely (it's not very clear in the pics - sorry), but you can see the beginnings of the break from the rim to the P. I believe (somebody please correct me if I'm wrong) that the New Jersey coppers were the first coins to bear the E PLURIBUS UNUM motto...which is kind of cool if you ask me. Comments (both good and bad) welcomed on this coin or on New Jersey's in general.

I think that this is an extremely handsome colonial. Wonderful color and surfaces. How much more problem-free can these be?

Any colonial copper that you can find with smooth, hard, brown surfaces is a keeper. So many of these coins come corroded that after a while you start to think that they all are.

I am a snob when it comes to colonial coins. I don't buy corroded. I know that if you are die variety collector that that is all you can often or even usually get, but it's not for me.

PCGS graded it VF-25 and I would tend to agree with that grade.

Inexperienced collectors might grade it lower, but the coin was flat struck in the center, so the grade is accurate, perhaps even 5 points on the conservative side. The area around the edge on the reverse suggests something higher.

Nice NJ!! The large planchet type is somewhat underrated. Try to find a pleasing VF or better at a show. When a NJ is found at a coin show odds are that it will be one of a handful of varieties. 1786 14-J, 16-L, 1787 32-t, 39-a, 43-d, 46-e, 48-g, 1788 67-v among others.

That alloy is in ridiculously good condition for its age. You need to be in this hobby very long to know copper is VERY temperamental just to say the least. I find your piece extremely attractive and I’m just a little bit jealous. ;)
    Very well done

Lovely piece. I miss the one I sold dearly, but you can't keep everything!
