Congrats. It looks nice. The last one I owned was 65FB. There are currently 23 MS/MSFB examples certified by PCGS so this is not a scarce Mercury Dime Variety, even when uncirculated. There are plenty certified at NGC and ANACS as well. They can even be Cherrypicked in MS but the demand is kinda low so that leaves plenty that are not even attributed. A few years ago, the TOP POP PCGS 67FB example sold at auction. The non-variety price guide at the time for 67FB was $28K! The variety sold at auction for $15K! If that doesn't speak to the demand for the variety, I just don't know what does. I mean, a regular registry set builder could have bought it at a steep discount, sent it into PCGS and had the variety removed from the label. This of course wasn't done but it could have been.

Nice Merc.... no FSB, has great luster and clean surfaces. Cheers, RickO
If I recall correctly, the 1928-S Cents were a minority of the mintage, and they were not that well struck.

I want to thank you for your old post on
Merc dime key date analysis,
I use it quite frequently. Alot of thought and effort went into it.
I am certainly not an expert on merc dimes. Although paying my dues is teaching me alot.
It is always nice to get feedback from the mercateers!
I jumped on this one, due to the fact that the 28s one of the harder to find dates in ms (as per your analysis), and then a variety of it is not often up for sale. 25 pcgs graded ms specimens seems scarce to me. Maybe scarce isnt the right choice of word.
Either way, this one presented itself, with its original skin, and I find myself anxiously awaiting it's arrival to the po box to see it's luster in hand.

This is mind boggleing(sp) to me! Not because I am a variety nut, but because of the point brought up by Keyman64.
The 28-S is a very tough coin in 67FB. If I were doing the basic set in that grade I would certainly buy that Large S and have it reholdered and save 13K. Actually you wouldn't even have to do that because that variety coin WOULD go into a basic set and not even show the variety. I mean it is STILL a 1928-S!!!!!

Very cool. It could stand to be updated and it would be interesting to see how those pops have changed but the tough coins will still be tough and the rankings likely will not have changed significantly.
The coin you picked up looks like a very pleasing example that anyone would be proud to own. Congratulations!
Here's an example of a scarce..errr, rare Mercury Dime Variety, the 1941 DDO FS-101, especially in Mint State. I cherrypicked the only known MS example raw in a 2x2 holder at a FUN show just a few years ago. Sadly I auctioned it, along with all of my other varieties, many of which were Top Pop. Financially it was the right decision for me and I did well. I still miss those coins though!
As for rare/scarce etc...try to always put it in perspective of the demand. When done that way, there are more than enough examples out there but the fun is definitely in the hunt. Patience is so important! The examples are out there and with patience you will find them. I know I enjoyed the very much. I think it was a span of only four years or so that I was able to locate almost all of the varieties, some of which I was able to cherrypick multiple examples in Top Pop. Always feel free to ask questions if you have any.
Here is my photo of the 1941 DDO when it was raw, prior to grading MS65 at PCGS.

I cherrypicked a ms61 1941 ddo for $12, and yes, the fun is in the hunt! Pcgs has still only graded 6 ms examples and your 65 is still tops.
