1985 D Off Metal Strike? Lincoln Cent Help Please

Hi All-
Came into shop with a bunch of steel cents....customer pulled it from pile as it blended right in...same "steelie" color.
Weight was 2.7 grams, right size , did not stick to magnet....customer said it was a reject from coin machine counter at bank...thoughts??

    It's been de-plated, if it's
    a grey-ish color.

    The mottled look makes me think it has been hit with some chemical. Weight of zinc cents are 2.5 grams; steel cents 2.8 grams; so weight alone would be inconclusive to me, since there is always variance. If it were an off metal strike, one would have to question what planchet was used? Bottom line to me... chemically altered zinc cent. Guess one could 'scrape' the rim (which of course would damage the coin), but zinc is softer than steel.
