Ebay coin listing policy requires a pic of the actual coin and no stock photos. Good grounds for "not as described" since ebay considers the pics part of the description. No doubt they're going to post a pic of the best looking one in the lot.
APMEX was clearly trying to find a label collector with this listing and ended up with an actual coin collector. Shame on APMEX. I love APMEX when it comes to buying bullion, but I go elsewhere when I want coins.
Good statement ,, "a label collector vs a coin collector "
My experiences for apmex ,, low ba

They are a great source for bullion items.
Coins, not so much. I inquired about a >$1,000 coin where only the obverse was shown. No returns are allowed so I asked for reverse photos. Told me photos were posted - a lie. Asked again and they finally posted reverse photos and I passed. Glad I asked or I would have been stuck with a dud.
What reputable dealer in coins does not allow returns?
Must just be a Midwest thing. But I can buy bullion items from local dealers and at local shows for less than Ampex pricing. Is that true for anyone else?
Naturally the best looking coin will be featured to captured audience. I don't bid on stock photo listings and no raws either from big establishments. Return and have them refund your shipping cost.
I believe this is the standard operating protocol at APMEX. Works for bullion and modern widgets but not for collectible coins.
Against my better judgement I looked at one of their Ebay listings for a Bust Half. Once again, a nice photo of the slab was in the listing - BUT NO REVERSE PHOTO was there.
So I asked them to post a reverse photo of the coin. Here is how they responded.
"Thank you for contacting APMEX. Our product team will be additional photos of the coin very shortly.
Please be advised that we currently have more than 2 of this items in stock. The photographs in this listing do illustrate the quality of the coin (s) you will receive, not the exact item."
I believe "quality" is the grade. And they still have a no return policy on these types of coins.
So beware of buying coins from APMEX - who knows what you will get.
I'll stick to buying bullion - if that.

I went round and a round with them recently. I bought a 1913-D Buffalo in MS-64. Had I received the coin pictured, I would have been VERY happy. But I knew the chances of actually receiving that coin were slim to none. I did return it with no issues. I also gave them a piece of my mind about listing a coin using stock images to sell a coin. The listing was not for multiple coins just one single coin. It really makes me think of the old "Bait and switch" tactic of a used car salesman. I'll NEVER buy from them again.
Here's the images they used on the listing. See if you can tell me why I might have wanted the coin pictured.
Not mine, I love APMEX and buy from them frequently. Albeit I am usually buying random date pre-33 gold from their ebay deals with the bonus bucks etc. Strictly below spot bullion plays.
Obviously if I was out to buy a collectable coin I wouldn't be doing so from ANY picture on the internet and especially from a random stock photo.
Never again for me. Which is too bad, I know I'm a drop in a bucket, but after a few test orders I took 40k somewhere else. I'd rather buy GSC and get spammed six times a day with stuff I don't want than ever buy apmex again.
Just an update to say I have brought my first $10 Indian gold (raw)
listed as AU condition. To me it has 10x better eye appeal than the "c" MS63 coin from Apmex. Maybe its an issue with TPG companies but that's another thread altogether...
They are a large, high volume seller. I am sure they factor in there may be returns but the time and cost of having an exact photo not doable deal I would think.
I would manage it same way to keep my sanity lol. I have received nice material from them in past.
If getting good material below melt using EB$ why not - u k what m doing that next time.

Just imagine If Apmex looked and bought coins .....that were later switched.... not the coins agreed upon ... before paying for them ..lol........would they still pay the orignal price agreement ????
I do not buy form AMPEX as I like to see the coin in hand prior to agreeing to purchase. I don't know how they sent this coin to you but if it was the U.S. Postal Service I would go to them and advise them of the situation. If this is not mail fraud it is as close to it as one could get. I believe it is as the coin you got was not correctly represented. I would request a refund or if you paid by credit card call them cc company and dispute the purchase. You will get your money back.
at one time there was 3 available. it was a stock photo, never expect to get the exact coin pictured from apmex, unless it states that in the auction, which very seldom happens. I buy a lot of gold from apmex and it's very good, high quality 90 percent of the time
Some of you guys are too hard on Apmex! They are primarily a bullion dealer and that is where the deals are. Their numismatic items are usually overpriced. Buy their specials while earning Ebay Bucks and you can get to a bullion price for some of their pre-33 gold.
I just got a PCGS MS64 random Saint $20 for $1367, factor in the Ebay buck and I got it for basically bullion, a MS64!
If they are 'primarily a bullion dealer' then they should stick to bullion. If they are going to sell numismatic items then they need to conduct their business thusly.
I'm sure they are fine for bullion for many people, but without rehashing my problems with them, they are no longer the company for me.

“Some guys” expect to get what they ordered. You haven’t evidently experienced their questionable business practices. They should be strictly in the bullion business. They seem to keep that portion of their clientele satisfied. They are not a coin dealer and should quit pretending they are.
I was duped by Apmex too.
Listing said 1912 $2.5 PCGS PR64.
They send me 1912 $2.5 pcgs ms64 cac.
Yeah, I know it was dumb to think I will receive the coin in picture for this kind of money, but still they could cancel the sale and not ship the coin.
Which makes me think they did this on purpose and fish for buyers who will not bother returning the coin.
They provided return shipping label and coin was received by them yesterday.
Now will see how many days will take them to issue the refund.
Oh, they refund somewhat quickly. No issues (as this has happened to me as well).
Just don't buy from them (unless just bullion type items) near the end of an ebay ebucks quarter....just in case....

So there is a pop 1 with a couple higher coin on eBay, and has been there a couple months. I see the same coin selling in Legends sale later this month. I ask seller how they can be selling the same coin in Legend's auction (expecting they would close the auction). This is the response I received ...
Thank you for contacting APMEX. This item would be APMEX website exclusive at this time. Please let us know if you have any further questions.

The first coin looks like a "shot" MS-64 while the second one looks like a weak MS-63 or average 62. If you think you overpaid, or if the second one does not fit in your collection because of preservation issues, return it.

You can be sure that their employees as well as many similar companies have the currently newsworthy "NDAs" with scary penalties for "squealers"....

I have also emailed them on the reasons on my return and pointed out some features they could implement to cater to their numismatic clientele.
