I'm curious about the toning on this Morgan. It appears as if the toning just spread around the numbers.
Don't quote me on that.

Love to see a pic of the whole coin, front and back.
That is called "pull away" toning. The cause is probably the way the metal flowed between the date and the rim when struck. For some reason the portion immediately below the date/stars, etc does not tone. Excellent pic and just what you want to see on a toned Morgan.

Pull away toning like yours is very typical of a naturally toned morgan.
Thanks Bob for the reply. Here are the full pictures. I actually got this coin from another member here.

Pull away toning. Very typical of air going over the surface for years on end. Nice.
It's not unusual with other series. Here's an 1821 bust half dollar.

Nice picture... makes the date look as if 'pushed up' from behind.... Cheers, RickO
That's a nice crescent toner. Nice pick up!

I'm really curious if/how fast the toning will continue. I have taken a picture and I'll take a picture every year to see if there is tone creep.
Don't quote me on that.
yes, natural.
How it happens?
No clue

There was a good article on this on the Jhon E. Cash website, which has been my go-to article when showing people toned Morgans, and it included a section on pull-away toning. I was about to cite it here, but I get a DNS error when I try going to it, so I assume the website no longer exists. Anyone know if the article has been archived elsewhere?
