furloughed federal employees continue to accrue pay and benefits. In the rare event there is no money to pay (has never happened in previous shutdowns), back pay will be provided when normality returns. There is no real shutdown of government expenses, only the services provided to the taxpayers by its affected agencies. Affected services are carefully chosen to maximize a public outcry to the legislators to git 'r done.
The solution is to require spending bills to stand alone with no pet projects or political differences attached. This is what is exactly causing the current "shutdown."
Furloughed federal employees who are deemed essential and must continue to work will continue to accrue benefits and will be paid retroactively. Those who are not considered essential (do not work in public safety) do not receive those benefits or pay.
As a retired non-essential federal employee I was furloughed twice and received full pay and benefits.

personally went through two "shutdowns," never lost a pay penny while furloughed and medical claims during the period were paid by my government health insurance. Days off counted toward my retirement total service calculation and did not affect annual and sick leave I accrued. When da boss man came around looking for furlough volunteers to meet the department's quota, all hands always went up.

Before you start pointing fingers, educate yourself. During a government shutdown, no one gets paid. At the end of the shutdown, all those who were deemed essential and worked through the shutdown (military included) will be paid retroactively. The rest of us will not. This is not the first time this has happened and it won't be the last.
Uninformed and knee-jerk comments, like yours, do nothing but perpetuate the proliferation rumor and innuend

Not to be political but looks like two years of stagnation around 18k. Before say roughly november of 2016 it takes off like a rocket. Not really a chart that proves the point. Yes Obama had many years of increase but that would be expected after the markets fell 40%+.
I would be willing to give Obama credit for his 6 years of increases. But giving him credit for the past year and calling 8000 points in the Dow a trump bump is a bit misleading.
I have already started preparing tax returns for 2017 and have been giving my clients projections bases on the new law. So far every one I’ve looked at will be getting some tax benefit for 2018. (About 20 returns) The incomes range from 20k-100k. The lower income with kids are going to see a large difference based on current incomes. I am doing this in a high salt state. The sample is small so far but squarely in the middle class.
"Not to be political but looks like two years of stagnation around 18k. Before say roughly november of 2016 it takes off like a rocket. Not really a chart that proves the point."
The Dow went from 6443 to 18,000 in 2014 then flat (normal) to 2016....... Dude that is a huge gain.

The markets have an average yearly gain of about 10% since the 30s. That’s average. The last two years of Obama’s presidency were stagnant. Your chart shows it. I would suggest you put partisan hatred of one person aside and look at the facts that YOU presented.
The markets are doing good. You don’t want to give trump credit for it fine but to say they’re not is ridiculous. I gave purely anecdotal evidence that MYclients so far are going to benefit from the new tax law. I guess we’ll give Obama credit for that too. I hear so much Hatred for Obama it gets tiresome .... The economy under Obama did just fine. Trump does have a great bump, but we can't judge a spike, short term. It may go a lot higher I see 30K. But The market does not go up forever. Trump will be judged on the market after 4 / 8 years.
Government shutdowns are the result of not agreeing on how to spend other people's money. While there is never an actual shutdown they are allowed to occur to panic the sheeple. Note how they don't last. What we really need is an extended shutdown to show how incompetent the decision makers really are.

TRUTH: Government shutdowns are the result of Congress failing to approve appropriations gained through federal revenue. When no money is appropriated to operate the federal government, it cannot legally operate--if it does, it is a violation of the federal Anti-deficiency Act. Federal revenue consists largely of taxes (individual income, corporate income, payroll taxes, and host of misc fees, remittences from the Federal Reserve, customs duties, etc.). It is not accurate to call it "other people's money."
While there is never an actual shutdown they are allowed to occur to panic the sheeple.
TRUTH: No idea where you get your information, but as a government employee for over 30 years I have lived through numerous shutdowns, including a 21-day federal shutdown in 1996. Incidentally, government shutdowns have occurred at the state and local levels too. And if you think the government doesn't shut down, just ask the hundred of thousands of federal employees that go unpaid when appropriations (their pay) are not approved.
Note how they don't last.
Of course they don't. The government could not remain closed indefinitely, so shutdowns will always end eventually.
What we really need is an extended shutdown to show how incompetent the decision makers really are.
TRUTH: Every day the federal government is shut down, it costs the taxpayers many millions of dollars in lost federal work time. We do not need an extended shutdown to show Congress' incompetence -- they show it in plenty of other ways.

Thank you for your service to our country. 99%+ of civil servants are deemed "non-essential," so no big deal there. It is important to note that you only "got paid to stay home" AFTER the government re-opened and AFTER Congress appropriated funds to pay you. Remember that when you were furloughed you didn't know if you would eventually be paid or not. No doubt the uncertainty was stressful. Getting paid was the right thing to do though since getting furloughed wasn't your fault and you were otherwise available for duty. And FYI, I did not get a three week paid vacation in 1996 -- I had to keep working.
Note how they don't last.

Again, you are entitled to your opinion, but instead of emotionally venting it would add credibility if you provided supporting information. The REAL, REAL TRUTH is that contractors cost the Federal Government more per year than civil servants after all the pass-through fees are paid to the contract companies. The advantage to having contractors, however, is that they are usually exempt from government shutdowns because their contracts are already paid in full so they have to keep working. They are only furloughed if their contract expires during a shutdown and funds are not appropriated to renew their contracts.

Folks, the political posts are getting way out of hand.
Some people come online and take part in special interest forums so they can escape the divisive world of politics.
For those of you that just can't keep from it, there are places for you to go and discuss political issues. THIS IS NOT THAT PLACE.
This is a warning, and moving forward, political posts will be treated with a zero tolerance approach, regardless of which political perspective one may be presenting.
