Determining the value of a 40% off struck Mercury Dime

At our coin club meeting, one of the fellows had a 1944 Mercury Dime that was 40% off struck. The odd thing was that it would probably grade a high VF?! Did someone use it as a pocket piece or did it actually circulate that way? (Rhetorical question!) Neither of us had a real clue as to it's worth, but I'd sure like to buy it as I've long been a fan of these dimes. Can any of you (Fred?) steer me in the right direction here? Thanks for any consideration you might give this request.

One of the few uses for a Redbook would be among the last few pages where they discuss errors. The chart/ grid should give you a ballpark idea if the coin matches a description mentioned. X percent off center. With or without date. Condition. But at the end the day it's a bit of a wildwild west standoff. What your willing to pay and what's acceptable to the present owner. Good luck. I would also check Ebay for comparable 40% or thereabouts O/C Merc's.

Odd items like that are worth what the market will bear. There is no real price guide. Don't bury yourself.

If it was Choice BU and truly 40% O/C it would be a 4 figure error...

As VF not sure as I haven't followed them grading that low.

I do not collect errors, but enjoy seeing them...It is a narrow market segment and I have no idea how to price them. Cheers, RickO

Actually ErrorsOnCoins is darn close.
(and I assume you were being facetious
with that exact number)

20% off Centers, in AU-ish, for example,
with dates, are worth about $250 or so.

This 1944 is 40%, but only VF. Without seeing
a photo of it, I'd guess it's a roughly $550-$600 coin,
retail value. Could be a bit less, depending on actual
condition, and if there's any problems with it.

As others have noted, there's no set price or
exact Trend price for these types of items;
it's the 'willing buyer/willing seller' scenario.
