Hey Merc guys, 1925 P Merc Dimes

Sandman70gtSandman70gt Posts: 1,040 ✭✭✭✭✭

There has been other threads on these...specifically fairlaneman did one in 2002.
The poorly struck 25's.
I did some research before buying this one.
The date is often a weak point, as is the peripherals on both sides.
Not many of these come up for sale in higher FB grades. Pcgs has graded less than 200 in 65 or higher. So I chose to buy this one. Pretty good peripherals, a little weak on the 5 in date, a little weak in 'states'. Soft on miss liberty's hair and wing. It has an overall sand blasted look. More so on obverse. The reverse details are strong. I've looked at a bunch of auctions and even the 66fbs are weak and have the sand blast finish.
Is this as good as they get?

The 1925 Buffalo Nickels from all Mints are also lacking in detail. I didn't think that other denominations also suffered until I read this post.

I'd say your coin is 64FB with a nice looking reverse.

A classic example of the 25P Mercury Dime struck from a Rusted Obverse Die. Nice coin both obverse and reverse.

The bands look "all there" and so is date. It does have a sand blasted look. Looks like a 65FB to me.

The mid 1920's are a fun lot of coins. There is some interesting stuff from that era.

So mine is rusted dies, I thought as much, but 25,000,000 P mint poorly struck? How many dies? All surface rusted?
I read about the two varieties of reverse dies. Mine is 2nd version, thus newer and better strike? Not sure, and then the 5,000,000 d mint and 5,850,000 s mints, what explains the all poor strikes on these?
Is it possible the common master die was rusted? Maybe why it was changed?Or Planchet issues? Or something else?
I dont yet have the d or s mints of 25. Are they poor strikes or sand blasted-rusted die finish?
