1944 Mercury DDO? - Just very cool Machine/Shelf Doubling of the entire date! SHOW YOURS thread.
Turned this into an MD APPRECIATION topic -- I've seen many others listed here (like me) and they ... never get any respect... (LONG LIVE Rodney for the old fogies out there...) So post your MD with PRIDE!
Previously...this newp posted...
Just sorting through some rolls and came across this little lady. Strong date doubling and several letters of LIBERTY, especially the Y.
Sorry for amateur pics...

Looks like classic machine/shelf doubling.... not a Doubled Die IMO.
That is my opinion as well.

Thanks -- I really need to figure out the difference. I know machine doubling is often a unique happenstance, but how do you differentiate? This one is quite dramatic.
It generally happens because machinery gets old or loose. Think of a loose nut on your bicycle wheel and all of a sudden you wheel starts to shimmy. Same here. The dies get loose for some reason and then start to chatter. This causes what you see here. If it looks like a "shelf" then it's machine doubling not die doubling.

Yep....MD.
I would keep it anyway........that's a pretty dramatic case of MDD.

Here is a 1944 DDO. Notice the splits on the serif of the 1, and the tail of the 9. Look for the splits...

Yes, machine doubling...nice DDO image posted by @fcloud ....Cheers, RickO
Thanks all -- the "shelf" analogy is helpful. Appreciate the real-deal pic post by @fcloud -- but sorry, my MD is far more sexy!!
And @afford noticed the "rust" contaminant in the left field. Something crusty going on there, may try some acetone to remove it. This is a good educational specimen that I shall keep!
Nice MD!
I picked up this md a while back. Its also got some clashing. Kinda fun
