Jefferson Nickel Variety of the Week: 1954-S/S RPM-002
Ok, it may have been more than a week since my last post, but I hope no one is counting!
I find the Re-Punched Mint Marks (RPMs) that are significantly displaced from the main mint mark quite appealing. You will see the second "S" south and west in the bottom loop of the primary "S". Pretty cool looking to me! This particular variety, in all the years hunting Jeffersons and the many varieties, I have only found this one. We all know there are more, but why have I not come across more than one? My theory or reason why these are tough to find comes down to one simple truth, 1954-S coins are typically not very well struck. This means this particular RPM is difficult to see if not well struck. The example below is a super example of a well struck 1954-S. Tell me how many 1954-S's have all the hair details over the ear and show all the pillars on Monticello? I look at a bunch of 1954-S coins not only for full steppers, but there are also two other Cherry Picker varieties; RPM-001 (FS-501) and DDR-002 (FS-801). So, who has one?
Happy hunting!

No luck
If we were all the same, the world would be an incredibly boring place.

JeffersonFrog, you know I have seen that one before and not sure why I did not pick it up! If I remember correctly, the coin was nicely struck like this one. Where did you pick yours up? Seems like the "S" was punched in at an angle that did not fully produce the bottom portion of the "S". If I ever have a chance to buy one of these again, I will!
That S looks inverted. That broken part is usually at the top.
I just never seem to look at Jefferson nickels.... I know in my change buckets there must be hundreds, but for some reason, I just do not check these coins. Guess I should add that to my 'snow day' list ...
Wow..that list is getting long....Cheers, RickO
