Paying attention......

to detail.
I was sitting at the dining room table last night looking at some coins and my son grabbed his collection and sat down next to me and started looking at his and the red book we checked out from the library.
He turned to me and said "Daddy I found an error!" I asked him what it was and he explained to me that the picture of the Buffalo Nickel in the book had a horn and his didn't.
I looked at it and told him he had a good eye for finding something like that.
I then explained to him that the good news was that he was right but the bad news is because of all the years of wear on it that is why it did not have a horn.
He was completely ok with it.
Then he asked me how hard it was to find errors like that.
I explained to him that it was all about training your eyes and getting to know the coins.
I was proud of him for looking at it that close.
Then it got me thinking and I explained to him the history of the Buffalo Nickel. It was a great time.

So is it hard when it comes to somethings over other things?
What type of magnifying glass do you guys use?

That sounds like a great time with your son.... An interlude you will treasure in later years. As to magnifying glasses, I have two hand glasses, a fingerprint glass (Sirchie) and two eye loupes. The Sirchie is quite handy... set it for elevation and then just place coins under it.... Cheers, RickO

Buy your son a inexpensive " large" hand held the Sherlock Holmes size.
I will only magnify 2x-3x but it will be great for him.
Sounds like you have a great relationship with your son..

I use a large magnifier as stated above and a small 17x power that I've had for quite awhile.

Thank you guys for your advice and help.
I got a couple of the big magnifying glasses that way they can look at them.
I do everything I can to have the best relationship with them as I can.
